Same ol'! The upsets continue w/ Alcaraz going down in flames to Norrie! We shouldn't be shocked! Paris has always been one of those events where there are so many variables! Players come in tired, injured, m/b w/ "end of season" pressures to make Turin! It's a crap-shoot, even for the elites to survive! Then there's the speed of the court! Normally it's like a "pane of glass" quick, but I've heard they've slowed the court down! The Big 3 weren't as subseptible to upset, but this New-Gen of players prob. w/b vulnerable! Carlos' already gone! We'll see if Jannik gets thru! Vacherot is on a roll after winning Shanghai! He'll play his cousin, Rinderknech in the 2nd Rd.! :astonished-face::yawningface::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:
Alcaraz cant be tired this was his first tournament back he didnt play Basel or Vienna it was the conditions of the court slow and low bouncing. and not a lot of margin for error,, he was not comfortable with and made 54 UFE in 3 sets, Cam Norrie held his nerve and won,

Alcaraz says this was one of his worst matches of the season in terms of sensations.Says he never felt the ball and had a bad game plan for this opponent and conditions

Apparently not too tired to fly around the world to play in an exho for a boatload of $ and no points.

This is the Cam curse. Same ole Norrie that has beaten Chuck several times and he says he played the worst match of his life every time, yada yada
Boy just needs to admit it. He doesn't like playing like him. What has he been doing all week since he skipped Basel? I've seen videos of him practicing, but I dunno what he's doing.

Carlos did come to Paris early to practice, saw a couple of his matches in practice, still you cant compare match practice to a match, he just didnt bring his game in the match and 54 UFE sums it up., while Cam stood tough took his chances and won

Well, Carlos losing in R32 makes the YE #1 interesting, even if still a long-shot for Sinner. Consider that Carlos is at 11050 ATP points, while Jannik is at 9010, 2490 points behind. The three scenarios:

  • Jannik loses Paris in the SF or worse (<9400 pts), in which case Carlos locks up YE1, regardless of the ATP Final.
  • Jannik loses Paris in the F, with 9650 points, or 1400 points behind Carlos. Jannik will need to win the ATP Finals outright (without a loss), and Carlos not win a single match.
  • Jannik wins Paris, with 10,000 points or 1050 behind Carlos. In this scenario, he still has to win the ATP Finals to be YE1, but has two scenarios: Win the ATP Finals while dropping a RR, and Carlos not winning a single match; or win the ATP Finals without losing a match, in which case he's #1 if Carlos wins two or fewer ATP Finals matches.
It is still very unlikely that Jannik is YE1, but it does provide a bit of drama.

If Sinner wins Paris, Alcaraz will need 3 wins in Turin to end the year as world no 1 according to my maths,
3 group wins
2 group wins + SF
Or qualifying to the SFs with 1 group win + semi final
If Sinner dosent win both Paris and Turin Alcaraz is year end No 1
I still think Alcaraz will be the year No 1, though as you say it does add to the drama, btw Janniks 3 previous showings in Paris, is poor with just one match win., this is first time playing it since he became a GS champion

Dimitrov sad to say has withdrawn citing a shoulder injury and Medvedev gets a walk over to the next round
Medvedev awatis the winner in the Musetti v Sonego in R16, a match vs Musetti would be huge for the ATP Race

In the battle of the 2 cousins, Vacherot wins again in 3 sets, 67(9) 63 64 over Rinderknech, and will play Cam Norrie tomorrow

Jannik Sinner is closing on history. According to Infoys ATP Beyond the Numbers analysis, the world no 2 has a chance to rewrite the record books in another way. Sinner currently leads the ATP Tour in both service game won and return games won. Since 1991, when the ATP began tracking such statistics, no player has toppled both categories in the same season

BTW Jannik played Bergs in his first round match won 64 62, appeared to handle the conditions well
Jannik plays the 'Dangerous One" in his next match

Some of the camera angles in Paris are ridiculous. It shortens the court so much looks like they're playing 'ping pong'!

Sonego d Musetti 36 63 61
The door is really open for Felix to make Turin now, still has a lot of work to do but certainly made easier with this result

Bublik (13) d Moutet in SS 63 75
Bublik said yesterday, the courts in Paris are the 'slowest indoor HC" he has played on
Quite frankly there have been varying reports from other players in Paris regarding the surface
