The Tournament:

The Paris Masters is an annual tennis tournament for male professional players held in Paris, France. It is played indoors at the AccorHotels Arena, in the neighborhood of Bercy. The event is part of the ATP Tour Masters 1000 on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour.

The tournament evolved from the French Covered Court Championships. In the open era it was held at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin until 1982. In 1989 it was upgraded to become one of the Grand Prix Tour (Grand Prix Super Series). The event is usually the final tournament on the tour before the season-ending ATP Finals. Because of its sponsorship, the event was officially known from 2003 to 2016 as BNP Paribas Masters, and from 2017 as the Rolex Paris Masters. Prior to the Tennis Masters Series replacing the ATP Super 9 in 2000, the event was known as the Paris Open. It is also often referred to as the Paris Indoor event in reference to both the facts that the other tennis event held in Paris, the French Open is held outdoors, and that since 2009, it is the only Masters 1000 tournament which is played indoors. From 1970 until 1986 there had usually been three indoor events amongst the top nine tournaments (then called the Grand Prix Championship Series), with there being four indoor events plus the year-end Championships from 1978 to 1980. From 1987 until 2008 there were two indoor tournaments at the Masters level.

The surface used to be one of the fastest courts in the world which rewarded bold attacking tennis, but since 2011 it has followed the general slow-down of most courts on the tour. Paris Masters was played on carpet courts between 1990 and 1999 and 2001 until 2007.

Ilie Năstase, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are the only players to have ever won both Parisian tournaments (Bercy and the French Open). Djokovic won Bercy in 2009, 2013–15, 2019, 2021 and the French Open in 2016, 2021, Federer won the French Open in 2009 and Bercy in 2011 and Andre Agassi won Bercy in 1994 and both in 1999 like Ilie Năstase in 1973. In 2015, Marcelo Melo and Ivan Dodig won the doubles events at both tournaments.

To date, Novak Djokovic is the only player to successfully defend his title in Paris (2013–15).

About Paris:

Paris is the capital and most populous city of France, with an estimated population of 2,165,423 residents in 2019 in an area of more than 105 km² (41 sq mi), making it the 34th most densely populated city in the world in 2020. Since the 17th century, Paris has been one of the world's major centres of finance, diplomacy, commerce, fashion, gastronomy, and science. For its leading role in the arts and sciences, as well as its very early system of street lighting, in the 19th century it became known as "the City of Light". Like London, prior to the Second World War, it was also sometimes called the capital of the world.

The City of Paris is the centre of the Île-de-France region, or Paris Region, with an estimated population of 12,262,544 in 2019, or about 19% of the population of France. The Paris Region had a GDP of €739 billion ($743 billion) in 2019, which is the highest in Europe. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, in 2021, Paris was the city with the second-highest cost of living in the world, tied with Singapore, and after Tel Aviv.

This event, even though a Masters wasn't taken seriously; mainly due to top players being just plain tired by the time it rolled around! It only remained impiortant to players on the cusp of making the YEC and needing the points to quailify! It's amazing how Djokovic has pretty much owned this event when past players were lucky to win even one! We're still waiting for Rafa to complete the Paris double, but so far he's been shutout! :sneezing-face:

Paris-Masters 1000 main draw wild cards,

Mannarino, Rinderknech, Gasquet, Simon.

Qualifying,

Halys, Gaston, Humbert, Thiem
I guess not surprising all of those French WCs, but you'd think they could have given one to Thiem.

I don't blame them! This is the last significant event before the YEC! Why waste it on Thiem? :face-with-hand-over-mouth: Like Murray, he's already abused the privilege!
I disagree...I think Thiem is arguably coming back. Over, say...Simon?

Indoor events favor flat-hitting players, and those who get discombobulated by wind and otherwise elements. End-of-the-season events do suit Novak, that is true.

Moxie,

Thiem will finish the week 25 points away from his YE Top 100 goal, expected to play 'qualifying' on Saturday in Paris
BTW The Sicilian is correct the reason Simon was given a wild card, he is retiring and this will be his last tournament.

I’m hoping Thiem can get through qualies, and make a decent run here to help his ranking going into next season. It would be nice to see him at least Top 30 before the close of season if possible.

Breaking news, Thiem will not play qualies in Paris, he has ended his season.Thiem finished outside the Top 100, but his actual ranking can be enough to enter AO directly. He was also due to play a Bratislava Challenger he has also cancelled that tournament.

Any word on why Thiem ended his season? I’m not opposed to it because he definitely has some things to work on like his court positioning and his forehand.

No, I havent heard why, I know he is going to play a exho tournament in Dubai in December, maybe he did not want to play qualies in Paris?

Super difficult draw for Nadal and super easy draw for Djokovic. What else is new...
