I'd love to see Thiem win this, as it would signal the end--or at least impending end--of Holy Trinity Hegemony. I think he has a chance--more than Roger had going into that SF--but obviously Novak is the favorite. But I voted Thiem in four, just for gits and shiggles.

Let's be honest this is Djokovic's to win/lose. If he plays the final as good as he did vs Nadal last year, he will thrash Thiem.
If he plays below his best level, kind of like he did in the first set of his SF match vs Roger (which I don't think he will do)
it might be a competitive 4 set final but ND will still prevail.

I am going with the upset here mainly because it's impossible to defeat Novak at this tournament without alot of weapons ..eg..Big serve..big FH..big BH..quick feet and the ability to extend and end the point going for the kill.. Dominic Thiem possesses all of those attributes..it will be a great match.

you should know better, different opponent will bring different game. Wawrinka can beat Djokovic no matter what form Djoker brings, there is such a thing called matchups, and Thiem playing his A game has a lot of resemblence of Stanimal. He has beaten Djoker 4 out of the last 5 matches, while Nadal has been owned for how many years now? For you to relate Thiem based on Nadal's results show severe lack of comprehension.

Roger himself said he thought he had 3% chance going into the match, Thiem is at least 40-60 split....slight underdog based on Djoker's past results but he is a matchup more like Stanimal than anyone else. IF he brings his A game, he will overpower Djoker. The best offence beats best defence, which has held true since the very beginning.

Everyone rationalising their hopes here :)

Thiem will be by far the toughest player Djokovic has faced this tournament. It should be a great match in any event.

I think Thiem is Stan v2.0. Novak has to be the favourite because of his experience. But I don't think that Thiem has any doubts about his ability to beat Novak. Unfortunately for him, this is about more than just beating Novak. If this was a semi-final I might actually favour Thiem. But this is about winning his first slam, so this is more than about his abilities. He needs to take that step and he has a ten ton killa who'll shiv him if he stutters
Good point comparing him to Stan, a lot of similarity.....both have very penetrating power game. Thiem himself said that both at their best, Stanimal has the slightly better backhand...….the highest level of backhand in history, though it's not that level very often. They also have devastating forehand and awesome serves, now Thiem also shows match toughness he is the complete package. Stan at his best also becomes mentally very tough and plus all the weapons he got, is what is required to beat Djoker. Federer has the game, but a lot of the elements he seems no longer possesses, and he chokes quite a bit when leading in sets or matches. Nadal on the other hand doesn't have nearly the same penetrating game, thus he needed to engage in long rallies and that plays into Djoker's best strength.

Well hopefully Thiem is inspired by Kenin’s run and believes he too can take it to a slam winner and win this.

Agree with some of this - particularly on penetration, but don't think Thiem has an awesome serve by top-level tour standards. I think he's served well in this tournament though. I don't know if he'll win but he matches up with Djoker better than most. Definitely agree on the match toughness, Thiem is in a good place right now and he's earned that the hard way. He's got a good shot at bringing home the bacon. Very much a live final... a Thiem win might just open the floodgates to the next generation.

I don't think guys look at a lower league for inspiration. I have never heard a ATP player referring to any WTA champion as his idol/inspiration. It takes a whole lot different level more to compete and win a men's title.

That. Nobody consider pressure Thiem is going to have.

I think he probably went through a bigger pressure cooker playing Nadal in RG finals. Djoker's not immune to feeling the odd nerves either - outside of playing Federer, that is.

Djokovic in my mind more so than Nadal or Federer has some head scratching losses on his roster. I’m not saying Nadal and Federer haven’t had those WTF moments, but I have seen it happen more with Djokovic, so anything is possible. I hope Thiem is ready to fight and win.

I have an extremely busy work schedule and my assignment have me traveling in South America..I didn't see the match vs Dominic but I am happy that Thiem was the aggressor..the number #20 is safe for another five months. I never felt Rafa chances down under was good enough to capture the title playing so passively.
