OMG, Bencic is still unseeded!

I know, I can't believe it! When I looked at the seeds list in this post I assumed she mustn't be playing here. How can she win a tournament and move to #12 in the rankings and still not be a seed? :cover

I can only think they created the draw before her "serious run" in Canada! Awful for Kerber! :cover :puzzled :nono :dodgy:

It is, but should be a really good match if both are up to their standards. Both can play some pretty nice stuff, but fancy Bencic to win it in the end.

Kerber could be a very tough opponent for Bencic. She just won the Stanford title for her fourth title of the year, gave Halep a good match in the Toronto QF, and she'll be more rested. With all the matches she's played and then all the interviews and things that come with winning a title, I'd think that Bencic is pretty tired. As a matter of fact, I think I might be just as impressed as I was when she beat Serena if she manages to come straight down and beat Kerber.

I was going to say Kerber is just as capable of taking Bencic out as Bencic is of taking Kerber out. You would have thought Bencic won a slam the way people are talking on here. It was a very impressive win in Toronto, but as we all know from our young crowd as of right now consistency has not been a strong suit. How about we see where she goes from this win? Does she follow it up with a deep run at the Open maybe she will since her ranking rose, so will expectations. Let's hope she can put together a solid summer run and a great fall.

It'll be interesting for sure. But whatever the result, the Rogers Cup win will do Bencic a world of good going into the US Open, win or lose here. She might go out early again like in Washington and then go on a great run in the Slam...

Kerber is having a great year and ready to climb back up into the top ten. I agree with you in that she is more than capable of beating Bencic. In fact, I think I still might consider Bencic beating Kerber an upset. After this whirlwind week, I'll be very impressed if Bencic wins this one. Like ToffeeAlex said, it wouldn't hurt her to lose here early and get ready for the USO.

Bencic started having good results beginning in 2014 USO where she reached the quarterfinals, for the first time in a slam for her. Before Toronto, she has won only one title in her career, in a grass court warm-up this year.

So, really speaking the "sophomore" season starts for Bencic beginning in 2015 USO. It remains to be seen whether she can keep up the good results.

However, I am cautiously optimistic, that Bencic will continue to do well. Even if she goes through sophomore slump, I would not write her off. She being 18, she has enough time to make mistakes, go through slumps and come out as a consistent elite player.

And Stosur goes out in the first round again. I guess she's saving it for Serena when they meet in the USO. :cover

Being a Wimbledon finalist may be some sort of curse. Muguruza goes out in the first round as well.

Venus beats Diyas to advance.

Muguruza has been slightly disappointing after Wimbledon. If you are going to lose, then make it in three at least. I know sometimes the adjustment period is hard for these players which is why I am giving Bencic her space and not pushing her as the next wonder kitten of the tour.

I hope we can see the Wimbledon form return to Muguruza soon - the aggressive, powerful tennis she was playing was mesmerising.

As for Bencic, I think her style is not so much powerful but more clever play and carefully-thought-out shots. This is perhaps more consistent than the aggressive style of Garbi. Only time will tell, but I hope both can be top-5 players in the future.

Madison Keys and Garbine Muguraza are mostly power players. However, Bencic is not that kind.
Having said that she is also not Aga kind who lacks power completely.

As Tignor put it eloquently, Bencic's game is a nice mix of Hingsian Guile with Moder Powerplay Tennis. She seems to be very good at wrongfooting the opponents based on my observation in recent matches. Her serve needs to improve though.

I think her serve will improve over the next couple of years both naturally and with training. Her current ability and results even at this age are what really excites people - imagine her full potential as she develops!

Carla sometimes appear to be lazy or sluggish...ES is boring to watch.:popcorn
some players seem not interested in Cincy..its their body language that gives them away.
I hope Serena does something about the weight she has gained after Wimbledon, just saw some pictures I couldnt believe my eyes. She has to do something before the Open....
she is still my favorite to win though.
