The Tournament:

The Madrid Open, currently sponsored by Mutua Madrileña and known as the Mutua Madrid Open, is a joint men's and women's professional tennis tournament, held in Madrid, during early May. The clay-court event is classified as an ATP Tour Masters 1000 on the ATP Tour and a WTA 1000 event on the WTA Tour. In the past, it has also been known as the Madrid Masters. The tournament is traditionally played on a red clay surface. The event was played on blue courts in the 2012 tournament edition, with the ATP deciding against blue thereafter.

Ion Țiriac, a Romanian billionaire businessman and former ATP professional, was the owner of the tournament between 2009 and 2021. According to Digi Sport which interviewed Țiriac in 2019, the tournament brings to the city of Madrid annual benefits exceeding €107 million. In 2021, Țiriac sold the tournament to New York–based giants IMG for approximately €390 Million.

About Madrid:

The city is situated on an elevated plain about 300 km (190 mi) from the closest seaside location. The climate of Madrid features hot summers and cool winters.

Karolina Pliskova has withdrawn, due to a knee injury she picked up in her last match at Stuggart ( against Swiatek)

What about Ons? Didn't she suffer a serious injury against Iga the other day?
Yes she had to retire in just the 3rd game, she was having tests to see if there was any serious damage, as yet I have heard nothing, though I have just got up, I havent had time to check any up to date news

With the Ons Jabeur withdrawal, Coco Gauff is now the highest ranked player in her quarter. Shelby Rogers takes Jabeur's place as the number 33 seed, meaning that a potential Gauff vs. Rogers matchup will take place in the QF instead of the 2nd round.

Ons Jabeur had been seeded No4 in the draw before her withdrawal.Shelby Rogers, previously the highest ranked unseeded player, will take Jabeurs spot in the draw as No 33. Rogers spot in the draw, instead of playing Kaia Kanepi in the 1st rd, she gets a bye, plays Bogdan or Bondar in 2nd round. Her first potential seed is (31) Begu ( 3R) not (6) Gauff (2nd R)
Kanepi plays a Q/LL

Projected QFs update: ( if the seeds hold) with the withdrawal of Ons Jabeur, Shelby Rogers will take Jabeur's spot in the draw as No 33, previously the highest ranked unseeded player

(1) Swiatek vs (7) Rybakina
(2) Sabalenka vs (5) Garcia
(3) Pegula vs (8) Kasatkina
(6) Gauff vs (33) Rogers

Note:.
Electronic line calling only on the 2 big show courts, Manolo Santana and ASV, line umpires on all other courts

Just looking at Emma Raducanu draw, which dosent give her any favors whatsoever, she plays LL V.Tomova in the 1st rd, if she wins she will play Iga Swiatek in R2, she needs to go back to playing challengers, actually win more matches, possible win a challenger tournament, gain confidence, improve her ranking, so she dosent get these horrid draws, receiving WC's to tournaments, going out in first rounds, is not helping her game at all.

15 year old Mirra Andreeva from Russia ,who received a wild card, extended her unbeaten pro record in 2023 to 14-0 with a straight sets 63 64 upset of Leylah Fernandez. Andreeva, has won 2 consecutive ITF W60 titles, played a Top 50 opponent for the first time and scored her first WTA main draw win.Well Done!

Yes she is, she has been playing challenger, just lost a TB to Yastremska 1st set 76(6)
Genie out of tennis 17 months due to a shoulder injury which required surgery, she has used her PR to play in this tournament, she won in 3 sets 67(6) 62 62 over Yastremska

Crazy match,
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova gets her first main draw victory in 15 months, defeating Kasintseva 61 67(5) 76(7) saved a MP in the final set!
Anastasia has been off the tour for sometime, having knee surgery, just recently came back on tour

Bouchard leading 4-1 2nd set it is a wonder Yastremska hasnt taken a MTO as yet, oh wait she usually does that when her opponent is going to serve for the match :)
Genie changed racquets after losing the 1st set 76(6) it helped her cause and she won the 2nd set 62, going 3 sets now
Genie wins! she defeated Yastremska 67(6) 62 62, Bouchard's first main draw win since Madrid 2017
Genie wont need her PR to play qualies at RG or Wimbledon this year with this win
