The Tournament:

The Cincinnati Masters (currently sponsored by the Western & Southern Financial Group and called the Western & Southern Open) is the second largest summer tennis event in the U.S. after the U.S. Open, as its men's portion is one of nine elite Masters 1000 tournaments on the ATP World Tour and its women's event is one of five Premier 5 events on the WTA Tour.

The tournament began in 1899 and is the oldest tennis tournament in the United States.

About Cincinnati

Cincinnati is the third largest city in Ohio. As the first major US city founded after the American Revolution, as well as its first major inland city, it is considered the first purely American city. Though its influence has fallen off since its heyday in the 19th Century, it still carries political importance, as well as being a major sports hub, home of the baseball Reds and NFL Bengals. Early immigrants to Cincinnati were largely German, which is reflected in foods and festivals even today. The Oktoberfest Zinnzinnati is the largest outside of Bavaria, and their Bockfest is the oldest celebration of bock beers in the US.

So Roger withdraws...he did tweak the back after all....That's a shame. I do not blame him at all for playing Montreal, I am somewhat puzzled though by why he did not prep better for it , especially at his age...He should have known better.

Even though it appears to be a bad news, it may be blessing in disguise.

1.Now with good rest for a week and then practice for a week, he will be fresher at USO than if he had won both Montreal and Cincy.

2. Back is not a big deal. He withdrew from WTF due to back, but he recovered well to play in DC a week after that.

3. Fed is guaranteed a #2 seed at USO, independent of what happens at Cincy. So, seeding wise he is in a good position without even playing in Cincy.

Six of the top 10 players are not playing in Cincy (Fed, Novak, Andy, Stan, Cilic, Kei).

I believe this must be some sort of record.

Monfils is another no-show due to injury. He would have been a seeded player if he was playing.

Do you really think in current form he could beat a surging Sasha?

Pretty hard to pick a favourite for this. Sascha said in his Montreal finals presser that he felt tired... but it would be a big statement if he continued his run and took Cinci.
