Despite standing 15 feet behind Rafa did not get a whiff of several first serves of Nick. However, Rafa picked up his own serve much better in the second set. He was eliciting several short returns from Nick which he could put away easily.

The only difference is that in that match Roger was the injured party. In this match Nick is the injured party coming back recent hip and/or shoulder issues.

They both have something to worry about heading into USO. Fed and his back and Rafa and his form, he was pathetic tonight and not good at all in his first match of the day too.
If Roger's back will be in shape, he will be in the third monday mostly. In a grand slam, he comes better prepared strategically and will be able to answer questions asked by Zverev. It has to be clear now that Roger (if fit) and Zverev are the best contenders for the USO.

It's true that Rafa didn't look good in either match today. I won't take that as a net negative, in the sense that everyone has a bad day, and the pressure was on him. I hope Roger's back is better, but it is a question mark. Just because they stormed the front part of the year, they are rather geriatric, and it's a lot to hope that they are just their old selves going into the USO.

And Rafa. Roger is an "if fit." And Rafa is not unlikely to take advantage of a good opportunity. And since Kyrgios looks so fit, I'd put him up there.

I would not worry about Zverev in a five set match. The boy has not yet become a man to win against Fed in 5 set match (and that too it will be in the final, as they cannot meet before that).
And he still couldn't win a hard court tournament with no other top players there. Doesn't bode well for his US Open chances.
For the first time in a long time I actually watched a Nadal match because I knew that if Kyrgios even put in a half-assed effort he would win. For once the guy got his head out of his butt and played a decent match. Who knows how he'll play against Ferrer though. He could be right back to head-up-butt bored mode.
Also, Darren Cahill is off his rocker if he really believes that Kyrgios doesn't get extra-hyped to play one Federer, Nadal or Djokovic on center court. He was spewing some nonsense on ESPN2 about Kyrgios just liking the big courts and the crowds and doesn't care who's across the net. That's total baloney. They only time Krygios gets center court with a huge crowd is when he's playing one of the Big 4 - and he knows that. He may get a center court match but not capacity crowds. The only time that happens is when he's playing the Big 4. In this match in particular you could see Kyrgios wanted to get the win over Nadal - and Nadal certainly did his part by playing like crap. At least Roger was hampered by a bad back in the Montreal final when he got blown off the court by a "young gun." What's Nadal's excuse - other than that whole hard courts are NOT his friend thing...

Truth hurts... Nadal blew a huge opportunity to win the tournament and get a 1,500 point lead on Federer going into the US Open. Now he'll go into the final Slam of the year with a 505 point lead over Murray and a 500 point lead over Federer - and 180 points to defend.to Roger's 0. The good news for him is that Murray had 360 points to defend. ESPN2 said Murray's already in NYC and looks like he'll play the US Open. So if Nadal wants to spend more than 3 weeks at #1 - he's gonna have to make at least the semis and hope Murray doesn't make the final (SO not happening) or Federer make the semis or better (could happen if he's health).Ironically I think Nadal has more to worry about than Federer...cuz even with a bad back Roger can play crappy on hard courts and still make it to the final. See: Montreal. Nadal? Not so much. See: Indian Wells, Montreal, Cincy... I'd normally wait until I see the draw...but...I'm going to say that regardless of the draw - Nadal loses before the quarters and finishes the year #3...assuming Murray plays decently the rest of the year...cuz the likelihood of Nadal winning the ATP Finals for the first time (unless they cover the O2 arena court in red dirt) to secure year end #1 is slim and none...
I think Zverev is still a question mark for 7 5-set matches at this stage in his career. He's played a lot of tennis this summer and if it's hot in NYC he may struggle - especially if he ends up playing most of his matches in daytime heat rather than at night - which is highly likely. He'll need to win all of his matches in 3 or 4 sets - otherwise I don't think he'll have the stamina to make it to finals Sunday let alone win the whole thing.
Hopefully Roger's back is better and he's able to work out if not practice...but he REALLY looked rusty in Montreal and clearly his serve needs some reps because it was horrible in the final.
