We have this stupid US Open Series sponsored by Emirates (what a waste of money) going on again this year. There are only four tourneys participating this year. They are Toronoto, Cincy, Atlanta and Winston-Salem.

Just to be eligible, you need to play in at least two of the four tournaments. Among, the big four, only Novak would be eligible. Novak is already in driver seat to finish as the winner of US Open Series which will give him another one million dollars if he wins US Open.

Only folks not going to Olympics will be playing in Atlanta. Also, Winston-Salem is the week before US Open and only classic losers (such as John Isner) will be playing in it. Besides winning these gives only 70 points compared to 100 points for Toronto or Cincy (in bonus challenge).

However, they do have the stupid rule of doubling the points of players who participate in three or more events. This will almost exclusively benefit the American players.

After two tourneys, the standing are given below.

1. Novak 100
2. Nick 70
2. Kei 70
3. Stan 45
3. Isner 45
3. Monfils 45

Novak and Stan are not likely to play any more before USO and so they will be disqualified. Most probably Nick and Isner will be there in the final standings (as their points will be doubled according to rules since they play in three or more tourneys covered).

I think they'll survive! We can always hope for a last minute WC; could happen, but not likely! Nole was devastated after losing that 1st round match in RIO; leaving the stadium in tears! :puzzled :nono :cover :cry

Here is the current leaderboard after Cincy.

T1. Marin Cilic (CRO) 100
Novak Djokovic (SRB) 100
3. Kei Nishikori (JPN) 85
T4. Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) 70
Nick Kyrgios (AUS) 70
Andy Murray (GBR) 70
Milos Raonic (CAN) 70
T8. Gael Monfils (FRA) 60
Stan Wawrinka (SUI) 60
10. John Isner (USA) 45

However, the results next week will be vastly different. This is due to two reasons.

1. To be eligible a player should have won points from more than one tourney. This would eliminate Cilic, Murray, Novak and so on.

2. Player who earn points in three or more tourneys, get their points doubles.

So, you should expect Isner to end up as #1.

LOL. Is this set up to make an American win something rather contrived?

Haha, I guess the one nice thing is it favors a cash bonus for the less big name players who play the 250s and 500s.

The great thing for Emirates is that they get big publicity and they almost have to pay nothing as Isner will lose within the first three rounds at USO.

Johnson is still alive- if he wins Winston-Salem, he will win the series due to the disqualifications mentioned above.

If they want this series to attract the big players again, they need to get the Citi open back into the fold. That is the only way that any of the top players will be remotely interested in it- Toronto, Cincy, and D.C. make a very feasible summer schedule (when the Olympics are not occurring).

Of course, maybe they don't want the top players interested in it. In that case, they should keep doing what they're doing.

1. Johnson lost today and he cannot win this thing anymore.
2. Citi Open was banned from USO series, as they give participation fee for players and
doing so is banned for USO Series events.

Don't know what happened to Isner; But, he is not playing in Winston-Salem. So, his points won't be doubled. So, this could make the USO Series open winner more interesting.

Where did you get the info that the participation fee was the issue? Everything I read on the subject (example below) says it was about the TV deal, namely Citi Open choosing to go with the Tennis channel instead of ESPN.

Nishikori ends up claiming the top spot, and now has a shot at the biggest payout in tennis history: $4.5M if he wins the US Open. Pretty big "if", though.

1. Nishikori 2. Grigor and 3. Milos.

So, even after creating so many clauses in the rules, the ploy of making an American win one of them succeed. May be, they should say it put it explicitly in the rules next time. :)

Milos got out in R64. So, gets $6,250 extra by virtue of finishing third in the USO Series.

Nishikori and Grigor are still alive.

Grigor (#2) lost in R16 and got $35,000 bonus.

Kei (#1) lost in SF and got $250,000 bonus.

Interestingly, whoever finished higher in USO Sereis went farther at US Open.
