Ostapenko has posted an apology on Instragram for her behaviour towards Taylor Townsend,

" I understand how the words I used could have offended many people beyond tennis. English is not my native tongue, so when I said education, I was speaking only about tennis etiquette, but I understand how the words I used could have offended many people beyond the tennis court".

Wild Cards Venus Williams/Leylah Fernandez continue their winning ways 76(1) 61 over Eikeri/Hozumi
Venus said after her first match with Leylah, she enjoys playing with her, Venus said ' best partner I ever played with outside of Serena" great compliment indeed from Venus
Venus and Leylah are into the last 16 of the doubles event.

Vince Hi!

Yes I watched that match ( in hospital I am out now) I have never been a fan of Osta not the first time she has shown her 'true colors" and has used 4 letter words and has got away with it,
Also she lost in the doubles so Karma has found a way to pay her back.

Take care and get well soon!

From my perspective, tough one to choose who i want to see win as i like them both.

Just tuning into Swiatek v Kalinskaya match with Anna leading 4-1 1st set
Anna serving for the 1st set 5-2
3rd SP for Anna, she has kept Iga off balance so far in this 1st set
Anna showing signs of nerves as she has had 2 DFs trying to close out the 1st set, she has to take her time and Iga breaks
Iga to serve at 3-5 1st set, Anna has given Iga some hope in this 1st set
Anna will get a 2nd chance to serve out the 1st set 5-4, Iga has been getting 35% of her first serves in this 1st set.
A DF from Anna and she gifts the break back again, 5 games all,
16 UFE from Anna and 19 UFE from Iga, this is not good tennis at all, Anna is standing too far behind the baseline has to stay on the baseline, which she was doing until DFs and UFE came into her game
Anna will get her 3rd chance to serve out the 1st set 6-5 Help Me if she cant serve it out, how many chances does she have left.
Broken again? I have No Words!
TB for the 1st set
Swatek 1st set 76(2), Anna become a UFE machine, mentally she needs a complete reset, she has left the court for a break, she could not close out the 1st set 3 times, she had to serve it out, she deserved to lose it quite frankly as Iga was playing poor and she was there for the taking
Anna's DFs continued in the 2nd set 11 DFs so far and her UFE 34
Iga will serve for the match at 5-4
Iga survives 76(2) 64 it wasnt a good game by either player, Anna should have had the 1st set in the bag, mentally poor.and could not reset her game at all.

Last match is between Haddad Maia (18) v M. Sakkari coming up on Louis Armstrong Stadium
Finally this match has started after the mens match went 4 sets
Haddad Maia too good for Maria Sakkari 61 62 and is into the 2nd week at the USO
Their match finished around 1am, honestly they could have moved this match onto another court earlier, did the officials forget about starting matches at 11pm?

harking back to Jelena Ostapenko, she's made a second apology . Here's what she had to say...

Hmmmm, shall we believe her, this time ???

"Without naming Townsend, Latvian Ostapenko wrote on Instagram: "Hi all - I wanted to apologise for some of the things I said during my second-round singles match.

"English is not my native language, so when I said education I was speaking only about what I believe as tennis etiquette. But I understand how the words used could have offended many people beyond the tennis court.

"I appreciate the support as I continue to learn and grow as a person and a tennis player. Goodbye New York and I look forward to being back next year."

Here's why not to believe her. She said she wasn't trying to insinuate that Tay was uneducated, she just meant about tennis etiquette. Whether it's tennis etiquette or anything else, you don't say something like that about someone else, period.

Second, whether English is her first language or not, she had no trouble dropping those F-bombs and what not on national tv. If anyone needs a class in tennis etiquette and decorum, it's the Latvian.

I'm good and tired of all these athletes saying whatever they want and then thinking some well crafted apology drafted by a PR specialist is supposed to magically make it all go away. Shut your trap in the first place and don't suffer from verbal diarrhea subjecting the rest of the world to your foolishness.

I agree, just the fact she never even mentions Taylor, is to me, a sure sign she's not genuine, but more likely has been advised to do by her management.

Agreed.

She'd better wise up fast but does she have it in her? Margaret was saying she has had similar outburst in the past (i missed those).

Very good comment here by Venus. Scroll to the point of 2:50 on this presser.

Then go back to the start.

This is sadly becoming a standard on how to handle it, but the damage has already been done. We recently had Saba, Osaka and now Ostapenko, all 3 embarrased themselves. Accept the loss with dignity and move on.
