To me, this is a bit criminal. I understand if they want to give some to young Americans, and that they have some reciprocal agreements with other Slams, but, since they seem so concerned about putting bums in the seats, and drawing people to watch matches, I would dare say that Stan would draw more crowds and eyeballs on TV that most of those wildcards. He also has more chance of moving beyond the 1st round than probably all of them. Even on his bad knees. I would bet exactly no one would want to see him in their first round. Makes no sense, and it's unsporting not to give a former champ a WC.
I agree, Venus Williams was awarded a wild card at the age of 45, also a past USO champion

Shocking! I know they tend to start Majors earlier on Sunday, but throwing Sabalenka & Djokovic out there wasn't expected! They're favorites! :fearful-face:
Sunday-Sunday isn't going to work, especially with a 2 pm ET final start time. It's eventually going to be Monday-Monday again, like in 2008-15. ESPN has the rights to Monday Night Football. The men's final will get better ratings if on a Monday than if on a Sunday. Work with the NFL, not against it. 2 pm ET on Sunday goes up against the 1 pm ET opening day slate.

Edit - I'm glad the players are pushing back on the Sunday start: https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/id/46064062/many-players-not-fans-us-open-sunday-start

Monday-Monday is the sweet spot. We even have 8 years of data on it.

Just watched the highlights of Medvedev. He clearly has worse mental issues than I imagined.

And he’s a complete cnut. And so were the crowd. This is a throwback to the disgraceful Nastase behaviour in 1979, in his match with McEnroe.

The US Open loss leaves no doubt that Medvedev is on the decline. At least with the French Open and Wimbledon losses, you could say that maybe Medvedev hasn't historically played well on those surfaces. But the first round loss at a slam on his best surface leaves no doubt on the state of his career. Medvedev might be entering the 1990s Mats Wilander stage of his career.

There are no words, which is why I didn't post any. Just horrible behavior from him and the fans. Poor Bonzi only hurt himself taking so long to serve. I'm glad he was able to recover in time after holding MP.

Well, that's the third 1R loss at a Slam by Medvedev. 1-4 in Slam matches this year.

Anyhow, I guess why he was pissed off. Bonzi shouldn't haven't gotten his first serve back - that was ridiculous. Of course Medvedev didn't behave well, but the ump made a bad call that didn't make any sense.

I don't think it was a bad call. There was an outside hinderance between the first and second serves. In that case, according to the rules, the player is awarded a first serve again. The photographer was an outside hinderance.

I agree w/ Mox. It was the right call. Anytime there is a hindrance between serves, you are awarded a first serve. Because it breaks the player's serve rhythm and momentum when there is a delay like that.

To me, Medvedev was lucky he wasn't thrown out, but I'm not sure if there is a rule for what he did. Plus, the match was nearly over, and the beleaguered umpire probably didn't want to incite the crowd even more.

Diallo v Dzumhur is a pretty fun match. That could go either way. Diallo won the 3rd and leads 2 sets to one. I've switched over to Alcaraz v. Opelka. Carlos has shaved his head for the occasion! He means business. Well, I guess we'll learn how fast his hair really does grow out, if he gets past this big server.

I don't anticipate his hair will grow back tonight after defeating the servebot. Let's see how hairy he is by the final weekend should he get there.
