I can't believe they missed a gimmick to exploit...if they had gotten Fognini to play with Flavia, they could have pitted two husband/wife teams against each other. I guess Fabio didn't want to? Surely, they thought of it.
i'm sure they thought of it too. did he get a wc? is he playing in the MD

Rain has washed out qualifying rounds at the USO. A few started at 11am edt, but were halted. They will continue tomorrow
The Mixed Doubles semis and final will be played tonight under the Ashe roof starting at 7pm edt.
Semi Finals,
Pegula/Draper (1) vs Swiatek/Ruud (3)
Collins/Cristian Harrison vs Vavassori/Errani
Who's idea was it to put Jess and Jack together. Two headcases and underachievers that find difficulty closing. One person on the team needs to be able to close.

Well I think he originally wanted to team w/ Navarro, but she chucked him to play in Monterrey and then politely went down in flames in her first match as the top seed. Siniakova was a late sub and seeing he's not 100% decided to bow out anyway.
Siniakova could not repair under the doubles rules, she withdrew from a tournament to play the Mixed Doubles btw a seasoned doubles player with GS titles and Gold medals at the Olympics, this event did my head in quite frankly and it was a shame that the seasoned doubles players were not allowed in, except for the defeding champs Errani/Vavassori who won thank goodness and defended their title

There are rumors that the AO for 2026 could have the same format for the Mixed Doubles? I hope Craig Tiley can come to his senses and keep the Mixed Doubles draw for seasoned players, though knowing Tiley 'sensible' is not his middle name.
Given that it was pretty appealing, I bet they will. Commentators on TC thought so, though they were equally sure that Wimbledon won't. As if, right? LOL.

I am going to the AO in 2026 for the 2nd week, so I will miss it, I for one love doubles both men and women, and at tournaments have watched some great doubles matches over the years.,I feel for the seasoned doubles players who play the tour full time and arent allowed to compete. It is all about bums on seats and the revenue it brings in.

It has to be Jack. At least he's still young, and has time to learn to close. Jess is 31. If she hasn't figured out how to close by now, she's never going to do it.

Jessica Pegula has had troubles in the past closing out matches
I don't think the pairing of Jess and Jack was a good pairing in the first place
I agree with Keli thoughts

I guess I didn't pay enuf attn.! I thought this MxD. event was just an ext. of the actual USO comp. during the "fortnight!" Wow; haven't used that term in a while! I just hope I don't hear any griping from players about being overplayed or injured w/ the top players on both tours! Tennis doesn't really need a gimmick! I think Sincaraz has represented well & successfully taken on the mantle from the Big 3 very seamlessly! It's helped as they retired over several yrs., rather than all at once! Personally I think they each stayed a little too long, but you can't argue w/ results! They each accomplished something at the end! Fed gave us another entertaining & heartbreaking loss at 2019 Wimbl. final after being up MP yet again! Rafa got his 2nd CGS w/ the aid of C-19 controversy ban'n Djokovic from his trip'l defense "down under!" Novak finally pk'd up OGM last yr. which was a lifetime goal!

Wow, that was marvelously stream-of-consciousness, even for you! :D

Your argument is that tennis makes enough news, good and bad? That it's plenty entertaining? I don't suppose anyone around here would disagree with you, but we're fans. We're the people that watch 4.5 hour + matches, start to finish. (And even re-watch some of them.) And I think the new format was an abomination to Grand Slam tennis, though it was fun watch. Which is the point: the powers that be are always trying to figure out what to do with a sport that tends to run long, and doesn't have a format that allows for fixed commercial breaks. Mixed doubles is the bottom of the totem pole, so they decided to shake things up.

Frankly, I was wondering if Swiatek might suffer from having played it. She rushed in from Cincy, then 2 days of relatively mild tennis, but I'm not thinking so much of physical toll as confidence. Her serve went off in the doubles. In any case, with novelty off, will the top players play again next year? Will they do it in Oz, if they Australia adopts the same format?

I totally understand your feelings & probably would feel the same if I were younger! I've seen it all in tennis, but at 68 I'm wheening myself off just about anything that takes as long as a simple match! Men & women battle, not allowing much in the way of simple service games! It's a war that can go on for hours & I just won't do that anymore! Djokovic/Nadal matches literally haunt me w/ how much time I've invested in a single match! It makes me tired just thinking of 2011 USO Final, 2021 FO SF, & the of course the longest ever, the 2012 AO Final! Getting the result I want is no consolation! Why haven't they seriously pushed the NG YEC scoring method? TB's @ 3 All!:face-with-hand-over-mouth::astonished-face::face-with-tears-of-joy:

From your earlier post, I thought you were against this. You said tennis doesn't need "gimmicks." I would consider going to the shorter format a "gimmick." Personally, I'm against that. Completely and utterly.

If you think altering the way we score to shorten matches a "gimmick," then call me a hypocrite! All I know is I barely surf by matches these days as they get into these relentless battles that make sets go for an hour or more! Back in the day it was expected from Novak & Rafa, but now everyone & anyone can extend these contests out to 3+ hours; even the women! It's gotten ridiculous IMO! I have no life, but I'm not going to waste what little I have on a marathon match between 2 unknown players; or even the best of the best! I have a ton of respect for Sincaraz, but even w/ their talent, I can be run off! It would hurt my soul to be a Jannik fan, only to see him drop that FO Final w/ MP in hand & mult. brk. pts.! Luckily I had no stake in The Lost Gens. I & II as their talent was blunted by the Big 3 w/ little success in comparison to past eras! END RANT! :angry-face::face-with-tears-of-joy::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:

Stan Wawrinka, 40 yo youngster, apparently asked for a wild card into this year's USO, according to his coach Magnus Norman, Wawrinka a past USO champion, was refused a wild card.

To me, this is a bit criminal. I understand if they want to give some to young Americans, and that they have some reciprocal agreements with other Slams, but, since they seem so concerned about putting bums in the seats, and drawing people to watch matches, I would dare say that Stan would draw more crowds and eyeballs on TV that most of those wildcards. He also has more chance of moving beyond the 1st round than probably all of them. Even on his bad knees. I would bet exactly no one would want to see him in their first round. Makes no sense, and it's unsporting not to give a former champ a WC.

I hope you don't think I was calling you a hypocrite. I wasn't, nor did I mean to imply it. I know there is a lot of handwringing amongst the powers that be as to how to shorten our open-ended game. Maybe I'll give it its own thread, or did up an old one, so as not to side-track the USO thread anymore. Thanks for the "rant," though. It's what folks at the top of the game are afraid that people feel. :turtle:
