Thanks AF,
Naomi Osaka is the defending champion, though her form this year has been sub standard, hard courts is when she usually shines, so far not this year.Paula Badosa the top seed, her season has also been sub par. Interested to see how Caroline Garcia's form is, in this tournament, after her s/final appearance at the USO.

Sad news for Daria Saville, who had to retire atfer 1 game against Osaka, she yelled out loudly, she will have a scan, she feels she has done her ACL, she really has only come back to the tour as she had taken time off after having achilles surgery.
Osaka will face Haddad Maia in the 2nd round.
Apparently this will be Osaka's last tournament for the year, Osaka did have enough ranking points to enter Guadalajara, chose not to and hasnt signed up for anything else.

In a hard fought victory Zhang defeated Garcia (2) 46 76(5) 76 (5) saving MP, Zhang played a more controlled match from the baseline 21 W to 21 UFE, highlight of the match when Zhang asked for a sandwich , after the 2nd set, which seemed to give her the edge in ways:)
It was Garcia's 2nd loss in 15 matches with 67 W to 49 UFE
Zhang will etiher face Pliskova or Martic next.

Sad news for Daria Saville who had to retire in her match yesterday in Tokyo against Osaka after 1 game, the MRI scans confirms she has suffered another ACL tear in her knee ( Torn ACL in 2013). Daria has battled back this year from Achilles /foot issues over a 3 year period, getting back into the Top 50 in basically in 7 months.

I'm watching the Zheng vs Badosa.
Early in the match but should be straightforward for Badosa

Does anyone know what's wrong with Kenin. She was very frosty to her doubles opponents and I don't understand her attitude. She looked at Nara and Doi like they are beneath her.

I think Kenin is on a permanent dose of 'angry pills' period., half the time she doesnt do a proper handshake at the net. The only time I have seen her smile is when she won the AO trophy, I know she has had her injury woes, just like other players on the tour., her attitude needs to change, at present I cant see that happening, I dont think she is popular on tour, I wonder why?
Kenin also got beaten by a quaifier in her first rd singles match in Toyko, which probably did nothing to enhance her mood lol!

Pertra Martic d Karolina Pliskova ( 6) 63 64.....Pliskova 1st serve was up and down in the match, served DF at critical times in the match, also her BP stat of 1/10 did not help her cause at all, though credit to Petra she kept the pressure on when it mattered and came away with the win in straight sets

That MIA final is the highlight of her year, and then got skunked in the final by a streaking Iga.

In a match that had momentum changes, both players made too many UFE at times, Haddad Maia battling back being down 2-4 in the 1st set to win the t/break and again down 2-5 in the 2nd set saving SP to force a t/break in the 2nd set which Kudermetova won.
Kudermetova found her game in the 3rd set, return game and playing first strike tennis and taking the ball on, she ran away with the 3rd set and won the match defeating Haddad Maia 67 (4) 76(6) 61
