The Tournament:

Roger Federer, who once served as a ball boy at the Swiss Indoors Basel, fittingly became the first player to win six titles at his hometown tournament in 2014. Switzerland’s leading sport event boasts an impressive list of former champions, including tennis Hall of Famers Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras.

About City

Located on the Rhine River near the borders of France and Germany, Basel contains the country's highest concentration of museums. The culture-centric city, site of the world's most influential art market each June, is also home to the lovely Munster Cathedral, made of red sandstone with a multi-colored tile roof. Green spaces abound, including the popular zoological gardens in the city center. Switzerland's largest site of Roman ruins, Augusta Raurica, are an easy day trip to the east.

Basel is Switzerland's oldest university city. Historic landmarks of the city include the large market square with its richly decorated red sandstone town hall and the late Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. During a walk through the old town, past small boutiques, antique book shops but also shops of modern designers, a visit to the "Läckerli Huus" to try the traditional Basel honey cake is well worth your while. Basel is tradition-conscious and open-minded at the same time, a fact born out by several modern buildings designed by renowned architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Mario Botta, Diener & Diener and Richard Meyer.

Almost 40 museums make Basel the city with the highest density of museums in the country. Internationally known museums, such as the Basel Art Museum, the museum devoted to the iron sculptor Jean Tinguely, the Fondation Beyeler and the Museum of Cultures attract a great many visitors, as do several galleries and playhouses. Basel is among other things home to the symphony orchestra and the chamber orchestra as well as the musical theatre featuring international productions. And a wide range of classical and contemporary productions are shown on the stages of the Basel Theatre and the Playhouse.

Looks a nice place to visit. Seems strange without Federer in the draw.

I know, I think Federer played there almost every year and has the most titles of anybody (at least 7?). Stan is leading the home favorites and the field is excellent, so that might soften the blow of not having their favourite one playing this year.

Yes, Federer has 7 Basel titles, and 12 finals altogether, which is the Open Era record for any tournament. He made 10 finals there consecutively from 2006-2015.
He has 8 Halle titles and other 7 title wins at Wimbledon, Cincinnati, and Dubai.
He has also made 10 finals at Wimbledon, the Masters Cup/WTF, and Halle.
Of course, Rafa Nadal owns the tournament title record with 9 at Roland Garros, Monte Carlo and Barcelona, and 7 in Rome, with 10 finals at Monte Carlo.

But both of the above, last year's finalists, are out of action for the year and so the tournament is available for others to win.

Wawrinka is the current betting favorite to win the title, but the notable player lurking and missing from the seeds listed is obviously WC Juan Martin Del Potro, fresh off his Stockholm title win. He is currently the second favorite to win the title, close to Milos Raonic.
Del Potro could win his 3rd Basel title, the second most this century, behind Federer.

Juan is now 41st in the race with 1020 points and the #1 Argentine. A win in Basel would elevate him to around #23. I'm not sure if he will play in the Paris-Bercy BNP Paribas Masters. If he did, he could theoretically get somewhere close to the top 12. Pretty good after being ranked over #1000 in February this year, no? He is probably a lock for the ATP Comeback Player of the Year award, which would be his second, as he won the 2011 CP award.

with ROGER'S RECORD there -- and his career all time

and basel as his hometown --

i think - after his career - it would be CRIMINAL NOT to rename it after him.

seriously.

it's ONE perfect setting that Roger Federer deserves to be named after himself. imo.

if one day they come up with a real petition to have switzerland do that for him --i'm signing. lol.

dimitrov and raonic have been , what by now , is quite a long time as 'the next generation" - ithink they have to make their BIG moves soon or they will be looking at the backs of not a few fresher faces holding big titles and maybe even majors.
