The Tournament:

The Canadian Open, also known as the Canada Masters, and currently branded as the National Bank Open presented by Rogers for sponsorship reasons, is an annual tennis tournament held in Ontario and Quebec. The men's competition is a Masters 1000 event on the ATP Tour, and the women's competition is a WTA 1000 tournament on the WTA Tour. The competition is played on outdoor hard courts.

Prior to 2011, they were held during separate weeks in the July–August period; now the two competitions are held during the same week in August. The events alternate from year to year between the cities of Montreal and Toronto. Since 2021 in even-numbered years the men's tournament is held in Montreal, while the women's tournament is held in Toronto, and vice versa in odd-numbered years. The Toronto tournament is held at Sobeys Stadium and the Montreal tournament is held at IGA Stadium.

About Toronto:

Toronto is the capital city of the Canadian province of Ontario. With a recorded population of 2,794,356 in 2021, it is the most populous city in Canada and the fourth most populous city in North America. The city is the anchor of the Golden Horseshoe, an urban agglomeration of 9,765,188 people (as of 2021) surrounding the western end of Lake Ontario, while the Greater Toronto Area proper had a 2021 population of 6,712,341. Toronto is an international centre of business, finance, arts, and culture, and is recognized as one of the most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities in the world.

Looking at the draw,

Top half of the draw is very 'top heavy' with Iga, Serena, Vika, Naomi and Garbine

Bottom half

Emma Raducanu (9) will be tested with a first round match against defending champion Girogi

Victoria Azarenka has to withdraw due to not having her visa approved ( Azarenka would have faced Bencic in Rd 1, winner vs Serena or qualier in Rd 2).

Just saw the renewed Halep destroy Donna Vekic 6-0 6-2. Halep played aggresively and almost faultless. That said - WHY are they placing Vekic to play first on a day after losing a long 3sets match yesterday. Alone on that condition Vekic didn't have a chance - but again Halep played very well - but on a sort of cheap background, but nice to see her happy again.

What an amazing point by Serena. Wow
That was vintage of the sisters turning defense to offense. But Serena isn't reading this girl's game too well. I've seen her body serve the girl a few times and that worked, but on the ground she keeps going to the BH and getting burned. That's where the lack of a coach is rearing it's ugly head.

I love Serena's kit, all Serena's opponents seem to raise their level when they play her, at present in the 2nd set, her serve is her biggest weapon.

After that marathon game, Serena needs to break and get out of this match for I fear a 3rd set is coming otherwise.
Serena lucky to get out of that service game, I have never seen Diaz play before, though she is bringing it to Serena and not backing away

After saving 6 BPs in her previous service game, Serena breaks and will serve for the match
