The Tournament:

The Madrid Open (Spanish: Masters de Madrid), currently sponsored by Mutua Madrileña and known as the Mutua Madrid Open, is a joint men's and women's professional tennis tournament, held in Madrid, during early May. The clay-court event is classified as an ATP Tour Masters 1000 on the ATP Tour and a WTA 1000 event on the WTA Tour. In the past, it has also been known as the Madrid Masters. The tournament is traditionally played on a red clay surface. The event was played on blue courts in the 2012 tournament edition, with the ATP deciding against blue thereafter.

Ion Țiriac, a Romanian billionaire businessman and former ATP professional, was the owner of the tournament between 2009 and 2021. According to Digi Sport which interviewed Țiriac in 2019, the tournament brings to the city of Madrid annual benefits exceeding €107 million. In 2021, Țiriac sold the tournament to New York–based giants IMG for approximately $283 Million.

About Madrid:

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. The city has almost 3.4 million inhabitants and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.7 million. It is the second-largest city in the European Union (EU), surpassed only by Berlin in its administrative limits, and its monocentric metropolitan area is the second-largest in the EU, surpassed only by Paris. The municipality covers 604.3 km2 (233.3 sq mi) geographical area.

Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula. Capital city of both Spain (almost without interruption since 1561) and the surrounding autonomous community of Madrid (since 1983), it is also the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. The city is situated on an elevated plain about 300 kilometres (190 mi) from the closest seaside location. Seasonal differences are large by Iberian standards with hot summers and cool winters. The mayor is José Luis Martínez-Almeida from the People's Party.

The draw has been made:

Nadal is in Djokovic's half and Alcaraz is in Nadal's quarter. In addition, Nadal can potentially face Kecmanovic in the 2nd round.

The top half is basically loaded.

Also, Andy Murray vs. Dominic Thiem in the 1st Round! (This is Djokovic's quarter)

In the bottom half, Sinner vs. FAA potential 3rd round match if it manifests.

Jannik Sinner going out early unless he figures out Tommy Paul pretty soon. Down a set and a break.

I see Murray and Thiem play each other today. I didn’t know Madrid has a hospice center.
C’mon, Tented!

What do you call if Federer and John Isner play each other this year? Haha

I haven't been paying attention to the ladies much, but was this done on purpose; lady Madrid running late & run to overlap the men's tourney! :astonished-face:
Arent you watching Sir Andrew vs Dominic at present ? Sir Andrew won the 1st set 63 you must be delighted :)
Seeing it is a WTA and ATP tournament it would be good if both started at the same time....
