Simona Halep is the defending champion I read that she has parted ways with her assistant coach,and rehired Danial Dobre.Her draw is workable.
I am glad to see Naomi Osaka has decided to play Rome,I am a big fan,though she needs to get enough matches on clay especially regarding her footwork.
This is the first tournament back for Serena Williams since the AO.Serena a four time champion at Rome has been working hard on the clay in practice.Serena and Naomi could meet in a projected seeded q/final,also Ash Barty versus Aryna Sabalenka.

After 3 1/2 hours of play Camila Giorgi was serving for the match against Sara Sorribes Tormo and just got broken back on serve in the final set,both ladies will need ice baths after this marathon match.5 games all final set,1st and 2nd set went to t/breakers.
Finally at nearly 4 hours of play Sara Sorribes Tormo d Camila Giorgi 76(4) 67(7) 75.
