Sledging

Some classic Cricket sledging...

1. Rod Marsh & Ian Botham: When Botham took guard in an Ashes match, Marsh welcomed him to the wicket with the immortal words: "So how's your wife & my kids?"

2. Daryll Cullinan & Shane Warne: As Cullinan was on his way to the wicket, Warne told him he had been waiting 2 years for another chance to humiliate him. "Looks like you spent it eating," Cullinan retorted.

3. Glenn McGrath (bowling to portly Zimbabwean chicken farmer Eddo Brandes): "Hey Eddo, why are you so F**ing Fat?" Eddo Brandes: "Because everytime I F*** your mother, she gives me a biscuit"

4. Robin Smith & Merv Hughes during 1989 Lords Test Hughes said to Smith after he played& missed:"You can't f**king bat". Smith to Hughes after he smacked him to theboundary: "Hey Merv, we make a fine pair. I can't f**king bat & you can't f**king bowl."

5. Merv Hughes & Javed Miandad during 1991 Adelaide Test, Javed called Merv a fat bus conductor. A few balls later Merv dismissed Javed: "Tickets please", Merv called out as he ran past the departing batsman.

6. Merv Hughes & Viv Richards during a test match in the West Indies, Hughes didn't say a word to Viv, but continued to stare at him after deliveries. "This is my island, my culture. Don't you be staring at me. In my culture we just bowl." Merv didn't reply, but after he dismissed him he announced to the batsman: "In my culture we just say f**k *ff."

7. Ian Healy his legendary comment which was picked up by the Channel 9 microphones when Arjuna Ranatunga called for a runner on a particularly hot night during a one dayer in Sydney... "You don't get a runner for being an overweight, unfit, fat cunt!!!"

8. James Ormond had just come out to bat on an ashes tour and was greeted by Mark Waugh....... MW : "F*ck me, look who it is. Mate, what are you doing out here, there's no way you're good enough to play for England" JO : "Maybe not, but at least i'm the best player in my family"

9. McGrath to Ramnaresh Sarwan: "So what does Brian Lara's d*ck taste like?" Sarwan: "I don't know. Ask your wife." McGrath (losing it): "If you ever effing mention my wife again, I'll F*ing rip your F*fing throat out."

10. Mark Waugh standing at second slip, the new player (Adam Parore) comes to the crease playing & missing the first ball. Mark - "Ohh, I remember you from a couple years ago in Australia. You were shit then you're fu*king useless now". Parore- (Turning around) "Yeah, that's me & when I was there you were going out with that old, ugly sl*t & now I hear you've married her. You dumb c*nt".

11. Yet another Australian witticism with this time porky Sri Lankan batsman Arjuna Ranatunga the victim. Shane Warne, trying to tempt the batsman out of his crease mused what it took to get the plump character to get out of his crease and drive. Wicketkeeper Ian Healy piped up, "Put a Mars Bar on a good length. That should do it."

12. Ravi Shastri v/s the aussie 12th man .Shastri hits it to this guy and looks for a single...this guy gets the ball in and says "if you leave the crease i'll break your f***ing head" Shastri: "if you could bat as well as you can talk you wouldn't be the f***ing 12th man"

13. Malcolm Marshall was bowling to David Boon who had played and missed a couple of times. Marshall : "Now David, Are you going to get out now or am I going to have to bowl around the wicket and kill you?"

14. Fred Trueman. The batsman edges and the ball goes to first slip, and right between Raman Subba Row's legs. Fred doesn't say a word. At the end of the over, Row ambles past Trueman and apologises sheepishly. "I should've kept my legs together, Fred". "So should your mother" he replied.

ok I just came to this part after a long time

I was completely for England this time . The ashes was just awesome for me because I hated the dominance Australia had earlier and seeing them fall is great

Of course I do realize this might be the worst ever test team Australia has sent

We'll have to do a GOAT cricket team and see how far we are all apart.

Sunil Gavasker
Jack Hobbs
Don Bradman
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Garfield Sobers
Viv Richards
Adam Gilchrist
Richard Hadlee
Shane Warne
Glenn McGrath

12th man : Ricky Ponting

It's a bit light on the bowling attack. I'd consider swapping Michael Houlding or Dennis Lillee for one of the bats.

My GOAT team would be

Greenidge
Haynes
Bradman
Tendulkar
Sobers
Gilchrist
Muralitharan
Warne
Mcgrath
Holding
Hadlee

As you admit, your team is loaded with batsman. Let us go for a team of
5/6 batsman, 1 wicket keeper, 5/4 bowlers.

I would remove Jack Hobbs and Glenn McGrath from your team and add
Mutthiah Muralidhararan and Malcom Marshall instead. I will use Ian Botham as
12th man as you suggested in another posting.

With the above modification, we will have two pace bowlers (Marshall and Hadlee),
Off Spinner (Mutthiah) and a Leg spinner (Warne). That would be a balanced team.

OK,

I'm going for 4 bats, 2 all rounders, 1 wickie and 4 bowlers. Sobers and Imran can both bowl as well as bat. Gilchrist is a superb bat as a wickie. Only hole is that I'm only going with one recognised opener, so Bradman is going to have to open with Gavasker.

Sunil Gavasker
Don Bradman
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Garfield Sobers
Imran Khan
Adam Gilchrist
Shane Warne
Glenn McGrath
Michael Holding
Dennis Lillee

12th man: Botham, Kallis or Hadlee.

I approve the eight players in your GOAT team. I don't have a problem with only
one specialist opener. I am sure a non-specialist GOAT batsman can rise to the occasion.

Of the four bowlers, two must be fast bowlers (medium pace will not do) and
one must be leg-spinner and one must be off-spinner. I think it is no brainer to
give Shane Warne the leg-spinner slot and Mutthiah Muralidhara the off-spinner slot
in the GOAT team. For the two fast bowlers, the choice is not so obvious as there
are many good candidates such as Hadlee, Lillee, Malcom Marshal, Michael Holding
etc. I am not quite ready to pick these two slots yet. But, I feel McGrath does not
deserve that slot as I want a true fast bowler there.

I'd rather McGrath as a medium fast consistent line and length bowler than carrying 2 spinners. I prefer Warne to Muralidhara and Sobers could fill in as a utility off spinner if need be.

The two fast bowlers I'd have could be one of a few really but I like Michael Holding in his prime as one of them.

I am convinced that GOAT team should have one specialist off spinner and
one specialist leg spinner and two fast bowlers, one of whom may be medium fast
bowler.

Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralidharan are no brainer choices for leg-spinner
and off-spinner.

I would definitely include Malcom Marshall as one of the two fast bowlers.
I don't have a sure choice for the other one. West Indies alone had an army
of fast bowlers (such as Holding, Ambrose, Garner, etc etc) in the 80's.
Actually, I would take any one of them in preference to McGrath.
McGrath has the most wickets among fast bowlers, but his average
strike rate and average runs given are inferior to many WI fast bowlers.

How about a compromise? I will throw in McGrath and we finish the
GOAT team.

We have even more balance after considering the all rounders. We will
have three fast bowlers and three spin bowlers.

I will worry about the 12th man later (Perhaps Hadlee, Botham, Kapil Dev)
But, I do agree that 12th man must be an allrounder.

I think that will be perfect team.

Who are we compromising for McGrath's inclusion? Marshall in for Holding? I'm ok with that, but I'm not sure if that's what you mean.

I've grown to like Botham as a the twelth man over Hadlee. Beefy was a terrific fielder in the slips an d a better bat than Hadlee. I'd give Hadlee the edge in bowling over their careers, but Botham in his younger days before injuries took hold was very close, if not Hadlee's equal.

I thought Imran was the best of the four but he's made the cut anyway.

My compromise was referring to the composition of the team, specifically having
4 specialist bowlers (not counting allrounders), one of whom is leg-spinner, one of
whom is off-spinner, two of whom are pace bowlers (atleast one of whom is real fast)
and not for the inclusion of any particular player.

Once you give me that structure, Shane Warne and Mutthiah Muralidharan are
lock for the two spinner slots. There are several possibilities for the pace bowlers.
I would give the super fast slot to Malcom and other slot to McGrath.

Actually, my preference is to give both fast bowler slots to superfast bowlers
only which would exclude McGrath.

Unfortunately, McGrath's batting sucks to give him one of the two allrounder slots.

I understand that McGrath has lot of consistency in line and length and
is basically a bowling machine (sounds like Ferrer of medium pace bowlers).
But he is more of a work horse than a fear inducing fast bowler.

Actually, it should be possible to get a medium pace bowler from the
all rounder slots (indeed we have it in Imran Khan). The real fast bowlers
usually suck in batting and so I would like to use the designated fast
bowler slots for the super fast bowlers.

My real choice for the second fast bowler will also come from
West Indies only. It could be Holding or the tree (i mean Ambrose).

I was looking around in the net for other people's opinion on GOAT fast bowlers.
I found the following one that gives author's top 10 list. Of course, this is just
the author's opinion and is not authoritative by any means.

However, I agree with his top two choices and that's all I can accommodate
in GOAT team.

See comments by fans also following this article. I am not alone in not
considering McGrath a GOAT fast bowler.

Here is my final GOAT team. The dream team of cricket, perfectly balanced
and contains many individual GOATs.

Sunil Gavasker (Specialist opener)
Don Bradman (batsman --- 1 of 2 GOATs)
Sachin Tendulkar (batsman --- 1 of 2 GOATs)
Brian Lara (batsman)
Garfield Sobers (all rounder, batsman and utility bowler)
Imran Khan (all rounder, batsman and medium pace bowler)
Adam Gilchrist (wicket keeper cum batsman)
Malcom Marshall (fast bowler)
Curtly Ambrose (fast bowler)
Shane Warne (Leg Spinner --- GOAT)
Mutthiah Muralidharan (Off Spinner --- GOAT)

12th Man: Ian Botham

Also ran for 12th Man spot: Richard Hadlee, Kapil Dev.

Comments from other selection committee members welcome.

Countrywise distribution of the above GOAT team.

West Indies --- 4
Australia --- 3
India --- 2
Pakistan --- 1
Sri Lanka --- 1

England --- 12th Man

Too bad that the founding nation could not get even one member in to the team.

However, no consideration of country of origin (or any quota system based on
countries) was used in forming the above GOAT team.

Incidentally, all the four west indies players selected for the GOAT team do
appear in a team called "Best of all Time West Indies XI" that is voted on by
many experts. See link below.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/468845.html

Surely, we must not be the first ones to try to form a GOAT cricket team.
Does any one know whether there is a GOAT team voted on by experts (unlike
mere mortals like us) similar in vein to the above link?

Maybe, but the issue doesn't seem to be whether McGrath was good enough to make a GOAT team, it's whether you really class him as a fast bowler.

I don't think it matters... he's good enough to make a GOAT team IMO.

Not sure tennisville - the Oz team seems flakey in it's resolve. An early defeat could see the internal feuding erupt again as blame is passed around. Lots of local media pressure on the Australian team and I'm not sure if this version has the character to withstand it. First test is pretty critical for Oz.

but this team showed a lot of fight in England where I believe it was much tougher for them. That team came of a horrible tour from India and fought their heart out salvaging 2 draws and almost winning the first test match.

The first test match is critical of course and if Australia draw or win that , then I feel this series will be a lot closer than what many people believe. Of course I am hoping Australia loses because I enjoy seeing them lose :angel:
