The Tournament:

The Vienna Open (currently sponsored by Erste Bank and called the Erste Bank Open) is a professional tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts. Originally an event of the Grand Prix tennis circuit (1974–1989), it is currently part of the ATP World Tour 500 series of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour. It is held annually at the Wiener Stadthalle, in Vienna, Austria, since 1974.

About Vienna:

Vienna is the national capital, largest city, and one of nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primate city, with a population of about 1.9 million (2.6 million within the metropolitan area, nearly one third of the country's population), and its cultural, economic, and political centre. It is the 7th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, it was the largest German-speaking city in the world, and before the splitting of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I, the city had 2 million inhabitants. Today it is the second largest German-speaking city after Berlin and just before Hamburg. Vienna is host to many major international organizations, including the United Nations, OPEC, and the OSCE. The city is located in the eastern part of Austria and is close to the borders of Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary.

Either this tournament will be either a bloodbath or snooze fest! Either way, it will be a very entertaining week because it is basically a Masters 1000 tournament but without a bye for the top seeds!

Just two wins for Novak needed to secure no 1 spot till end of year. No matter what Nadal will do.

YE No 1 6 times, amazing. Just Pistol Pete could do this.

If adding some more points he nearly for sure will catch Rogers fabulous record at weeks at no 1 in March/April.

I don’t think Austrian midget can win this, fake Swiss will put him down in 2nd round.
Hope for Novak-Daniil Final.

Seeing Thiem was to play Nishikori before his withdrawal, he will now play LL Vitaly Sachko from Ukraine.

It's still one of the strongest 500's ever! It's so reminiscent of a Masters-1000; just no byes! Nadal will have to play Paris to gain some pts if Thiem does well! Surprising how these last events may not determine #1, but they'll decide seedings early on next season! Up for grabs! :partying-face:

With one more victory in Vienna,Djokovic will secure the year end No1 ranking for a 6th time and match the record set by Pete Sampras.Djokovic d Krajinovic 76(6) 63.Novak will play Borna Coric in his next match.

I feel sorry for Wawrinka, after his knee surgery he is not the same player he was before and now with 35 I doubt he will do much better, sad

Novak Djokovic d Borna Coric 76(11) 63

Novak will secure the No1 ranking for a sixth time matching Pete Sampras record, (if Rafa Nadal does not take a WC into Sofia tourament 8-14 November, which I feel is highly unlikey seeing that he has confirmed to play Paris Masters).BTW if Novak wins the title in Vienna he secures the No 1 year end ranking regardless if Rafa Nadal plays Sofia or not.

A real joke that this is even in question! How does one skip months of play, is upset early in Rome, wins FO, but is in line for #1?

^^the rank charts are shagged up,,folk are keeping last years points thanks to covid, and atp's make do and mend rankings plan this season. far from ideal but then a global pandemic is not ideal is it.

we have the odd sight of rafa at no2 with 2 tourneys since early marxh..monfeils still high even though he loses every week seemingly, and federer rank 4 despite zero tennis since january. etc.

Settle, Novak will still get his No1 ranking for the year end for the sixth time.....I am curios to see what the ATP proposes for the rankings in 2021? COVID-19 is not going away, this will affect some tournaments that cannot comply with the COVID-19 protocals in place.ASB tournament in Auckland for both the men and women in 2021 have already been cancelled. Also a lot of players might not want to travel, which is understandable.
