Bit of a stacked draw isn't it? Gasquet v Nadal in the first round!

Verdasco v Dimitrov
Janowicz v Murray
Lopez v Berdych
Gulbis v Fognini

All potentially very interesting openers too.

Ralph's up to his usual tricks lol. In his presser, he said: 1. His wrist still hurts during the first 5 minutes of practice; and 2. Novak is normally the favorite at almost all tournaments and likes to play in Beijing. As usual, he's setting himself up as the underdog/chaser.

Number, schmumbers -- this is just back from injury Nadal, who hasn't played an actual match in about three months. A possible first three rounds of Gasquet, Karlovic, Gulbis isn't a dream draw.

Gasquet will never get a better chance to beat Nadal than a first round when Rafa's playing his first match back from injury. Maybe he could do it this time. I still find it amazing that two guys who both reached the year end championships last year are playing in the first round of a 500 tournament.

This tournament has been stacked for the past couple of years. I think they pay them a bit extra to play here.

No wonder that the draws are difficult, Nole doesn't have any easier time than Nadal.

Fun fact: Nole never lost here, he played 4 times and won all 4. In 2009 he beat Cilic, in 2010 he beat Ferrer, in 2011 he was injured and didn't play, in 2012 he beat Tsonga and last year he beat Nadal. I even remember all these matches ( I think I will take a break from tennis once Nole retires:lolz: )

Now that I mentioned it, Nole will probably lose.

The field is stronger here in comparison to Tokyo where there is another 500 event
with exactly the same draw size is going on. This is because of couple of reasons.

1. Prize Money: Tokyo spends a total of $1.4 million on prize money whereas
Beijing spends about $3.8 million. That is almost three times
as much as Tokyo.

2. Location: With Shanghai ATP 1000, a mandatory event, being held right next
week in China, travel is lot easier for folks who play here.

^ A second reason wasn't needed. ;)

There is also a third reason which I did not mention. If they play in Beijing, they get to
hang out with the girls.

Murray is so worried that he will be ill treated in UK, he is spending all his time in China.
He is playing Shenzhen, then Beijing and then Shanghai. Looks like he may apply for Chinese
citizenship.

I was thinking about this the day he announced his feelings towards Scottish independence and Wimbledon next year will be very interesting to see how much booing he receives. If it's bad it may very well hurt his chances there for the future.

^ We'll see but I suspect they'll only turn on him if they can find another Brit that can win a tennis match. Murray means too much to them, and can get away with murder.
