The Tournament:

The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles; junior's championships; and wheelchair, legends, and exhibition events. Prior to 1988, it was played on grass courts, but since then three types of hardcourt surfaces have been used: green-coloured Rebound Ace up to 2007, blue Plexicushion from 2008 to 2019, and blue GreenSet since 2020.

First held in 1905 as the Australasian championships, the Australian Open has grown to become one of the biggest sporting events in the Southern Hemisphere. Nicknamed "the happy slam" and often referred to as the "Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific" the tournament is the highest attended Grand Slam event, with more than 812,000 people attending the 2020 tournament. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its three primary courts, Rod Laver Arena, John Cain Arena and the refurbished Margaret Court Arena equipped with retractable roofs.

About Melbourne:

Melbourne is the capital and most-populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Its name refers to an urban agglomeration of 9,993 km2 (3,858 sq mi), comprising a metropolitan area with 31 municipalities, and is also a common name for its city centre. The city occupies much of the coastline of Port Phillip bay and spreads into the Hinterland towards the Dandenong and Macedon ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley. It has a population of 5 million (19% of the population of Australia), and its inhabitants are commonly referred to as "Melburnians".

Very dangerous #13,14 and 15 seeds. I am surprised that Mrs. Monfils is seeded so far down.. I thought she had a pretty good year. I guess she lost a lot a points because she must have had better results in 2020.

The Australian Open will run at half it's capacity under new restrictions as Omicron cases continue to surge in Victoria, but all tickets previously sold will remain valid.Masks will be mandatory at all times,in all arena's in Melbourne Park, except for eating or drinking.,that also includes walking through Melbourne Park.

S.Kenin vs M.Keys who just won a tournament in Adelaide will be a interesting match up,Kenin won the AO a few years back
Interested to see if Osaka has got over her abdominal injury that forced her to retire in a Melbourne tournament with only a few matches under her belt.,if so she will have no trouble against Osorio.
Paula Badosa who won the Sydney Tennis classic on Saturday, plays Aussie Tomljanovic which could be interesting?
Hopefully Ash Barty can continue her good form from Adelaide Tournament where she won singles and doubles.

Defending Champion Osaka on court, her opponent Osorio did play any lead up tournaments before the AO and it shows
Osaka 5-0 1st set
Yes, Naomi is wiping up the court with her.

Not so fast Osaka broken while serving for the 1st set
Osaka will again to serve out the 1st set 5-3
I wish Wim Fissette would coach Osaka a better transition game to the net she gets caught out, also Osaka playing doubles would also help her with her net game,
Osaka finally wins the 1st set 63
