Alcaraz defeats Fritz 6-4, 6-4 to win Tokyo for his 8th title this season. This is clearly his most complete season of his career.

In the 2nd SF in Beijing
Medvedev leading 1st set 7-5
Medvedev was serving for the match at 5-4 and was broken, back on serve in the 2nd set with Tien to serve at 4-5
5 games all 2nd set
Tien has a good return of serve, though he needs to address his serve, also he might want to get to the gym and put some muscle on,
Tien to serve for the 2nd set 6-5 he broke Medvedev's serve
Well done Tien winning the 2nd set 75
1 set all going 3, Tiens camp really have to concentrate on his serve, allowing him free points, at times he struggles on his serve.

Mrzz,
If you are around I was reading why Fonsca's team decided to miss Asian swing and play some indoor tournaments, they felt he needs the experience of playing indoors, which I also feel is a good idea. Anyway lets see how he goes, one of the area's I feel he needs improvement is his defensive skills.

Sad to watch Medvedev in pain and cramping badly in the early games of the 3 set against Tien in the SF at Beijing and the umpire gives him a code violation for 'lack of effort" Gosh that was harsh!
Tien wins via retirement 57 75 4--0 and will play Sinner tomorrow in the final at Beijing
Medvedev had a good tournament, reaching the SF and beating Zverev along the way, bad luck to end a match having to retire and the umpire Adel Nour was harsh in my opinion giving Meddy a code violation when he could hardly move.

With Alcaraz's withdrawal in Shanghai, the next player to be seeded, Corentin Moutet, becomes the 33rd seed and takes Alcaraz's place atop the draw. The Frenchman will face Beijing finalist Tien or Kecmanovic in the 2nd round. His place in the draw is taken by Q Basilashvili. The LL is McDonald, who plays Halys.

The season isn't over, but Alcaraz's year is very close to Sinner's 2024.

2024 SINNER: 8 titles overall, 6 big titles (2 Slams, Tour Finals, 3 Masters) + Six Kings and Davis Cup. 92.1 Win%.
2025 ALCARAZ: 8 titles overall, 5 big titles (2 Slams, 3 Masters) + 1 Slam final; 9 finals in a row (7-2).

I assume Alcaraz will play one of the indoor 500s, Paris, and the Tour Finals, giving him three shots to get to the magical 10 titles (he has to win two). The last player to win 10 titles in a season was Novak in 2015 with 11. If he does it, he'll be the 13th player of the Open Era. See Legends thread for list.

Currently Alcaraz isnt playing any ATP500 indoor tournaments,
Sinner will play ATP500 Vienna which he added to his playing schedule,

It’s not just numbers.

Alcaraz current year IMO is more impressive because of his consistency on all surfaces, red clay, grass & Hardcourts. He’s won Slams on 2 surfaces and won a 500 & a Slam finals on a 3rd. Sinner last year (2024) as great as it was, was pretty much just HC.

This year Alcaraz is clearly the best clay court player, Sinner took the grass crown by virtue of his W crown, while the Hardcourt throne is still up for grabs. It may actually come down to the YE ATP tourney, though I suspect if Alcaraz does well enough in the Paris Masters he may have the YE# 1 wrapped up by then.

Seeing that the ATP1000 Shanghai Masters will begin on Wednesday 1st October,
There are 11 withdrawals including,
Alcaraz, RBA, Dimitorv, Draper, Fils, Fonseca, Paul, Hurkacz
Wild Cards,
Stan Wawrinka, Yibing Wu, Juncheng Shang, Yi Zhou, Zhizhen Zhang
Corentin Moutet becomes the 33rd seed and takes Alcaraz place at the top of the draw
The Frenchman will face Beijing finalist Tien or Kemanovic in the 2nd round
It has become unbalanced draw.

I am just waiting to see if there will be a separate post for the Shanghai Masters

And yet the blind, unprofessional tosser umpire gets no fine. HE should get a massive fine. If these clowns in the ATP didn't have double standards, they'd have no standards. Medvedev was clearly dragging his leg along limping over to the net while speaking to this clown. Disgraceful umpire.

Fronty I agree with your 100%, I watched the match, Meddy was in pain, and could not move, "blind freddy' could see that. I am happy that the ATP intervened and Meddy was not fined, the umpire should be sent to have his eyes 'professionally checked' before he can chair another match as far as I am concerned!

Gael Monfils has shared his decision to retire at the end of next year ( Gael will retire at the Paris Masters 1000 in 2026)

"I held a racket in my hands for the first time at two and a half, and began playing professionally at 18.
"Now after celebrating my 39th birthday just a month ago, I'd like to share that the year ahead will be my last as a professional tennis player".
"The opportunity to turn my passion into a profession is a privilege. I have cherished during every match and moments of my 21 year career. Though this game means the world to me, I am tremendously at peace with my decision to retire at the end of the 2026 season".
