Well Sinner didnt play the tie either, both teams stood up in this tie, rankings I feel can be thrown out the window, where DC is concerned

yes and no. Italy has a stronger team in singles even w/o their big dogs. Babycakes is no slouch and Cobolli is top 30. Spain had the superior doubs team, but you can't always put that kind of pressure on your doubs to save the day. Some ties need to be won in the singles.

Munar had a H2H 1-0 against Cobolli defeated him on a indoor hc in Shanghai this year, he started like a house on fire 61 in the 1st set, it looked like the tie would go to the doubles, Cobolli steadied and won the match, it was close in the 2nd and 3rd sets

That doesn't really make sense, if Foki was unavailable. Who, then, would they have used instead of Alcaraz? They sort of had to hope he would play. Spain has the fewest players in the top 100 in at least 2 decades.

What about RBA? he has played well for Spain in the past and is good on HC, though is ranking has slipped No 51, maybe he was unavailable

I am glad the Italian media has stopped having a go at Sinner for not playing DC, he played the ties before and helped them win,
Seeing Italy won without Sinner, Musetti, they have surprisingly ' shut up' LOL!

Italy had the stronger team, period. Spain "looked" like they had the stronger doubles team, because they'd played so well this week. And, arguably, Marcel Granollers plus anyone is a good doubles team. He's ranked higher than Bolelli and Vavasori, who are ranked 13 & 14, but only by a few places. B&V are actually a doubles team with great results and titles. It's just that they never had to play this week, because Italy got out of every tie without having to resort to the deciding doubles.

Berrettini is finally playing really well again, and Cobolli is definitely coming into his own. This is great. Munar is also having his best season yet. PCB is getting older, but played well, given the state of his elbow, until recently. Spain did great to get this far. They've always shown cohesion as a team, and I think Ferrer has been a good captain. He was a very tough player who never gave up, and only recently retired, so I think he inspires that kind of mindset. Spain beat Germany, even with Zverev, and on the strength of their doubles. Personally, I think both teams get extra-credit for great heart and discipline this week.

Also a fading light, but yes, an option. I saw Marc Lopez on the bench for Spain, so he was possibly available for doubles? Ferrer went younger, in Martinez. And didn't get a chance to decide for doubles today, even if Lopez was an option. I don't see that RBA would have done any better than PCB.

You know that it matters a lot to them when the "second string" gets to win it all for their country. When the Spanish team beat Argentina in Argentina in 2008, without Nadal, it meant a lot to those guys. They were not favored. Italy currently has a lot of depth on the bench. Kudos to Berrettini and Cobolli!

I am all for giving younger players, playing in DC, Martinez played well, I mean how are you going to get experience playing in DC, its a different kind of atmosphere, and competition than atp tennis in the year, as I said ranking dosent mean a lot, when players put on their shirts for their country, they seem to raise their games, gee I think you and I have witnessed that in the many years of watching DC

Why are all the ATP players headed for the Maldives in their off season? I just saw Sinner and Zverev going on the same plane to the Maldives, I understand it is warmer than Europe this time of the year, I dont get the attraction I would rather go skiing, though I suppose you could pick up an injury if you had a accident, even the WTA players flock to the Maldives in their off season.

I prefer the beach, too, so I get that. Plus, yes, as much as some like Sinner and Djokovic love to ski, it's not a great idea for top tennis players to risk injury. Plus, may as well stay acclimated to the warm weather.

I think we can also add Roger into the conversation his love of skiing, he didnt pursue it, just in case of accident, when he was playing

Way back when, Martina Navratilova had a "60 Min." interview w/ Nancy Lieberman in tow! They talked about working out in other sports to train including skiing which is a way of life for some Europeans like Sinner! She said she'd "only be concerned about injury if I didn't know how to ski!" Accidents happen so I think it's crazy to even take a chance of injury outside of actually playing tennis! :angry-face::yawningface::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:

For me DC should be all about depth. Rules should be built around preventing a one man team from winning. Italy and Spain do have depth (Spain historically is the team with more depth, Italy recently got there), but the main factors stopping one man teams is the very fact that top players are not prioritizing DC, plus the coincidence that the top 2 players in the world are exactly from the two deepest teams.

Nothing can match relaxation and the summer vibe on the beach and in warm weather. It is complete resting of the body and soul, recharging the batteries etc.

Skiing is not resting really. It is a nice sport and relaxing in it's own way, but there's a lot of work involved in it. All the heavy gear on you, the boots, the skiis and the skiing itself. It helps a lot if you were raised with skiing. I wasn't. So yeah, I'm choosing the beach too.

Fun fact: I said this is the winter I will finally go, start learning how to skii and grow from there. I did a few hours before and I know some stuff, but not enough. Anyway, the winter is coming and I'm just not feeling it again and I don't want to go against what my inner voice is telling me. I guess I'll just play tennis indoors and be happy with it.

Don Hi!

I can give you free skiing lessons, I adore skiing and I learnt as a very young child, I am not a beach lover at all, yuk sand gets in parts I dont want to talk about lol! and I find skiing relaxing, each to their own I guess, even though I live near a beach in Sydney and I have never gone :)

Just an update on Holger Rune,
Rune has been working hard in the 5 weeks since he fully ruptured his left Achilles tendon. Rune was seen on the practice court at his Monte Carlo base, practicing fhands while hopping for the ball in a boot. Rune has been doing fitness work in the gym. Rune expects to be in a walking boot for another 6 weeks at least, likely will miss a good portion of the 2026 season
