Well, most of the time! I was no fan of Andre Agassi, but he lost a few 5 set matches to players w/ a lot lower ranking! He just wasn't in shape! :face-with-hand-over-mouth:
I said it favors them, I didn't say it means they'll win. Upsets also happen. Dimitrov beat Federer, maybe for the first time, in 5 sets at the USO in 2019, I think.

No one is lucky in this. That's a terrible word to use. If you want to say he dodged a bullet, he did. If he was going to win this one, he'd have to have played 5 sets, which may not have finished tonight. But Grigor has a terrible record v. Top 10 players. 43-89, I just looked it up. Yes, he was playing very well, and could have taken any one of the next 3 sets. But Sinner could have won it outright, too. Best 3 of 5, and it doesn't matter if they're the last 3.
He’s lucky he dodged a bullet, happy now?

I get the feeling the Dmitrov retirement is going to set the wheels in motion for BO3 at the men's slams. We now have this generation's 99 Philippoussis moment, even worse considering Dmitrov was up 2 sets. No one wants to see that ever again. I know I don't.

Well Dimitrov has been forced to retire 4 times previous at GS level, I dont think the ITF will decide to put the wheels in motion because of his latest injury on court which he had to retire yesterday to put in motion for BO3 at GS level, It was unfortunate and it has also happened to other players.

I don't see how you draw this conclusion from that match. Because you think the powers-that-be in tennis will have finally realized that men are not strong enough to play best of 5, in the same way they think the women aren't? Or is it the hew and cry of the unfairness of it all, when Dimitrov had a solid chance at one of the best wins of his career, playing some very great tennis? I don't see how changing the best of 5 would have made this outcome any more fair.

If anything changes Majors to Bo3, IMO, it will be because they are long, and the tennis powers believe the audience has no more tolerance for it.

And, shall we add, it happens all the time in Bo3 matches, thoughout the year, too. What does taking away Bo5 solve?

Jannik Sinner has booked a practice court at 4pm local time today. The goal is to access condition of his right elbow following medical exams

TC did say that he'll have an MRI, and they'll update us, also when they hear back from Dimitrov's team about his tests. Fingers crossed for both players.

It dosent solve one thing Moxie, there have also been retirements through injuries in the BO3 tournaments, there will always be injuries in the game of tennis, just a fact,

Jannik did have a nasty fall early in the match was given pain medication, and yes it did affect his serve and fhand, fingers crossed as up to that incident he was playing very well
I hope Grigor hasnt torn his pec muscle if so, it will take some time to heal

Without the Bo5, Dmitrov wins in straight sets and doesn't get hurt, which is probably a better outcome for the greater good of the world.

I get that it won't prevent all situations. But I feel if a player has won the first 2 sets, it should be sufficient. I'd be even for a compromise for a hybrid Bo3/Bo5 in the men's game: If a player wins the first 2 sets, he wins. Otherwise, it's a Bo5. That will make the first sets more important. If you don't win either, then you were unprepared and don't deserve a 3rd. (By the way, 99 Philippoussis-Sampras still would have ended the same way if we had a Bo3 or my hybrid Bo3/Bo5 solution.)

Dimirov got hurt early in the 3rd set yesterday and had to retire? so there goes your BO3 shot in flames.,
Best of 5 sets in Grand Slams is a proven test for both players, a BO3 is not period
If they ever decided to change GS to a best of 3 tournament that is the day I Finish Watching Tennis!

He won the first 2 sets, so that would have been a sweep in a Bo3. (Unless you're Mirra Andreeva, and you don't realize or want to play a 3rd set anyway.)

I am against playing the BO3 sets in Grand Slam tennis period, best of 5 is a complete test for both players, BO3 is Not
Injuries sad to say have been and will be a part of our game
Grigor has retired in 5 consecutive GS events? they havent up to date decided to change GS to best of 3 because of injuries and they wont.
I am watching Saba v Laura both Moxie and I are on the same page, I expect others are as well

Fritz having no trouble at all in his match against KAA leading 2 sets to love 63 64
Good God just when I thought Fritz would win in SS, KAA is leading 5-0 3rd set,
Is anyone watching that match at all? as I am trying to watch 2 matches at once
KAA won the 3rd set 61
Fritz leads 2 sets to 1

lol, I knew you were going to jinx it when you said "having no trouble at all in his match". After what happened to Dmitrov last night, I don't know why anyone would even say that.

I'm mostly watching, but Khachanov is rather too boring for me. I listened to commentary in set 3. Taylor was serving great, playing great, in total control, then he went off the boil suddenly. Serve rather fell apart, and KK's picked up significantly.
