Rafa should skip Indian Wells (that's where his current, ongoing injury troubles began back in 2022), and come back during the clay season. If I were Rafa, I wouldn't play anything outside of clay going forward. This should be Rafa's 2024 schedule:

Monte Carlo (April 8)
Barcelona (April 15)
Madrid (April 22)
Rome (May 6)
French Open (May 27)

Hamburg (July 15)
Olympics (July 29)

Retirement
He should only come back on the clay, but I don't agree with this schedule. Definitely skip Madrid, and probably either one of Monte Carlo or Rome. Barcelona is as close to home-turf as he gets. And I think he loves MC. Play MC, Barcelona, then rest for RG? Hamburg, no, IMO. Olympics is a bonus. I think he'll play W, if he's fit. And I hope he plays the USOpen.

Yeah the last thing we want to see is for him to overplay and get injured, he should be selective with which clay tournaments he plays as a preparation for RG.

There's an argument for only Barcelona before RG.

Every year — every damn year! — there’s the call from users not to play Madrid. And what does Rafa do every damn year? He plays Madrid. If he comes back again for the clay season, I’d be shocked if Madrid isn’t on his schedule.
Hopefully with this latest setback, Rafa will realise that he dosent have to play all the clay tournaments leading into RG? ( that means not playing Madrid which isnt a proper clay court to start with ) just a few tournaments to get his clay legs, anyway we shall see.

Sure, we’ll see, but he has never shown any indication he’s going to skip a Masters tournament in his own country, nevertheless one on clay (clard).

Hmm, I think it depends on how well he does there. If he reaches the Barcelona final or wins then maybe it would be enough. But if he loses in the QF or before then I think he would want more matches under his belt. I think he will aim for Barcelona, Rome and RG. I think Rome is the most similar in terms of conditions to RG so that's why I feel it's important to him. But most importantly he should listen to his body.

Here's what Alex Corretja thinks

I will wait to hear from Rafa/or his team, after he visits his doctor, I have read nothing as yet, there has been many rumors floating saying he will return to practice in a week,

Nadal fan thread 206 pages, Djokovic fan thread 34 pages, both created on the same date in 2015. That's why Pushovic can never be GOAT in the public's eye, his impact on tennis is just blah.

Come back soon sweet Rafa, thousands, millions, billions, trillions are waiting for you. Yes, trillions, as I'm sure in other galaxies other species are advanced enough to have satellite and are eagerly awaiting your return too. :rose:
