Speaking of Curly, if he gets past Delbonis in Miami, he'll have Medvedev in his next match! I guess it all depends on how much mental Daniil handles current situation back home! This w/b his 1st Masters seeded 1st which comes w/ added pressure! There is no Novak to buffer it all!

Actually last years MIami Masters Medvedev was seed #1 for the tourney. I racked him over the coals because I felt he had tanked the end of his QTRS match with Bautista Agut, thought that was irresponsible to say the least for the number one seed.

Novak should have withdrawn his name from Miami when he withdrew from IW.The draw was nearly stuffed up again,as there was only 24 hours before the qualifer's started.

We did discuss this a few days ago. I can't seem to find anyone who thinks that's a good idea, including sportswriters. Hopefully Wimbledon got over that idea by now.

Still cannot find a reason as to why FAA has withdrawn,though maybe the report was wrong ...Another womens player withdrew yesterday in Miami and I still cant find out the reason why.I wish journalists would post as to why players withdraw and do their job properly at times.

Well I wish journalists who report that a player has withdrawn and cites the reason why? I dont think that is too much to ask,it is part of their job,why post if you have not got the full information.A player also has to inform the tournament the reason why they are withdrawing as well.

I usually take or leave whatever they deign tell us! I believe most of them outright lie or don't know, so just isn't that important "why" they "WD!"

Players missing/withdrawing at the Miami Open is not a good sign for the tour and the tournament site. It is a Masters 1000 tournament too so it is somewhat a big deal.

For whatever reasons my how things have changes through the years, back in the day Miami was the "5th Major", and IW was struggling for a while, even looking for a buyer; until the weensy factor of a Billionaire buying the event and the venue jumpstarted it.

Also it just seems that HC back to back with IW most now opt for IW and some are too exhausted to continue or would rather rest before the start of the claycourt season in Europe.

At least the final isn't "best of 5" as in season's past! Those could be brutal with heat, wind, and blowing sand at IW's! I give kudos to anyone who can win these events B2B; even with BO3! It's tough which is why Nadal hasn't done it and is still scratching to get even one Miami Master! He can't acquire a Golden Masters down 2 events with a big fat "goose egg" behind his name while Djokovic is a double winner! Nole might surprise us playing this clay season with all this rest he's had! True enough, he won't be battle-tested, but as long as he can get in 2 or 3 Rds. I think that'll be good enough before Wimbledon!

I definitely think they both competed for the "5th Major." Miami is rather the Latin American Major, too. I think things might have changed when Acapulco moved from clay to HC. We'll see how it goes, but I don't see it as a diminished 1000 right now.

Perhaps it's more that IW has grown by leaps and bounds.
As I mentioned before, IW was in a fairly precarious financial position for a few years, heavily mortgaged, and there was even the threat that with new buyers the event might be moved to a different location. Thank you Larry Ellison.

IW has influenced tennis venues in a big way since 2009 when Larry Ellison bought it lock, stock and barrel:

Things may change in the future, but for now, IMO in facilities for both public and the players, IW Paribas stands shoulders above every other Masters in the ATP calendar year. The players have named it their favorite tournament for x number of years running. 475K attended in 2019, only surpassed by the 4 Majors, and it has the largest permanent tennis exclusive stadium (including the Majors) outside of the USO, as well as a permanent 8 thousand seating capacity Stadium 2.

Before that, it was clearly the younger child compared to the Miami Masters as far as attendance, etc. (The old Key Biscayne location had a lot of charm but it limited expansion) Miami yes, it always has had a latin vibe to it. However IW really does have quite an international flair to it too these days too.
