I didn't compare him to Gaudio, but to Berdych, Tsonga, and Ferrer. I don't think he was a better player than those three -- that he belongs more in that category than, say, Medvedev. Cilic won a bunch of titles, but most were ATP 250s.
Hmmm... I'm with @PhiEaglesfan712 in this one. Not because of the numbers, but because of the level he eventually reached. Cilic didn't inherited a Major, he won one fair and square playing great tennis. He got to two other major finals again playing great tennis. I agree those were just a few moments in a long career, but all those other guys simply didn't have them.

Yes, I hear that. I'm not taking away his Slam title nor am I making an overall career assessment. But I'm talking about something specific: Whether or not a player disappoints from their perceived potential. Before 2014, no one would have been surprised or disappointed if Cilic never won a Slam. If you look at his career up to that point, it didn't scream "future Slam winner." He was actually perceived somewhat lower than Berdych/Tsonga/Ferrer.

At that point, yes, definitely.

Fritz is 17 and Medvedev 20 in the Race - both have had pretty bad starts to the year, at least relative to last year (for Fritz) and the last 5+ years for Medvedev.

Race Rankings after Wimbledon:
  1. Alcaraz 7540
  2. Sinner 6000
  3. Djokovic 3380
  4. Zverev 3230
  5. Draper 2940
  6. Musetti 2610
  7. Fritz 2465
  8. Shelton 2210
  9. Ruud 2075
  10. De Minaur 2035
Remaining big titles: Canada (1000), Cincinnati (1000), USO Open (2000), Shanghai (1000), Paris (1000), Tour Finals (1500) = 7500

Jannik has some ground to make up, but there's a lot of points left in big titles, and Jannik tends to be really strong in later hard-court seasons. Carlos really dropped off after the Olympics last year, so he'll have to do much better to end up as #1.

This is a little misleading! You've successfully made me into "a liar" by turning the rankings upside down! I just posted that even if Carlos had won today, he'd still be well behind Sinner who has a huge lead! It's gonna take even more time for Alcaraz to overtake Sinner in the rankings after not defending his Wimbledon crown! :face-with-hand-over-mouth::yawningface::fearful-face::astonished-face:

At this point, the Race rankings are what matters in terms of year-end #1 -- that is, in terms of what they need to do from here on out. Or to put it another way, Jannik needs to win +1541 more points for the rest of the year than Carlos.

But you are correct that Carlos has a ways to go to overtake Sinner, but consider their points to defend:

Sinner: 5830
Alcaraz: 1060

That's why there's such a huge disparity between rankings and race rankings. To be #1, Jannik is going to have to defend a good portion of that, while Carlos--as long as he doesn't go walk-about like last year--will continue to narrow the gap.
