Winning ugly is probably the best description for the final... but as a Federer fan I'll take it and the semi-final performance was a treat.

Seems Fed gets fired up playing against Nole;)

Congratulations to Federer and his fans! It helped that this was his first week playing after USO while others played more tournaments. Let's see how the end of the season plays out. It looks like it could be very interesting.:clap

I missed all the action from this week, even the results, is Rafa injured or he lost in Shanghai? I can't go back to all pages to look through.

I actually thought there was a certain tactical elegance to the match. He couldn't do the same things against Simon that he did against Nole. But it was great to watch what he did to work out the problem It's really nice to see how solid his stroke production is right now. Bodes well for the rest of the year

Correct, but it was the case before he won Shanghai also, despite the fact this is his first
Shanghai trophy. This is because he had previously won Madrid Masters when it was
occupying the current slot of Shanghai and is considered equivalent when talking about
career golden masters.

Rafa needs Miami and Bercy.

Novak just needs Cincy.

"I got very, very lucky," Federer said. "I know what a privilege it is to be here today."

Congrads to Roger.

Some may argue it wasn't luck but the Master knows better! The Tennis gods did look after him here.

I have a feeling that Novak will go down as the only one of the three to win every Masters tournament. Roger had his best chance at Monte Carlo this year. I suppose Rafa could go on a tear and get Miami and Paris, but it seems Novak has the best chance.

Rafa was actually injured and held off on surgery by taking antibiotics (he has appendicitis). But he also lost.

Thank you both for answering me. Poor Rafa, he is sometimes just unlucky.:puzzled When there are injured top players, the tour is not as competitive or as interesting as it should be.

These things might be dealt with differently now, but long time ago when somebody had problems with appendix (is that a proper word?), they would just operate. I had 2 cousins that had to have a surgery. I have no idea how they will treat it on Rafa other than a surgery? Good luck to him, whatever the doctors decide.

Rafa won Madrid indoors in 2005, which occupied the same calendar slot...

I've said this a few times already, but Federer has really impressed me this year. '13 was quite a substandard season for Roger and he really looked like he was going on a fast decline, but he's responded incredibly well.

^Yes I agree. I only wish he'd shut his pie-hole about his back problems. We're not stupid, we would have been able to figure out that something was wrong last year without all the stories! If you're willing to play don't cry when you lose

It must've been immensely frustrating for him last year (especially with the excessive media storms of "is Federer over?", "Federer should retire", etc., etc.,), so I don't blame him for bringing it up a lot this year.

In other words, he won the Rogers Cup. Rome and Monte Carlo are the only two he hasn't won.

Yes it's just a question of city, Rome and MC are the most difficult for him 'cause of the surface and all Spaniards, Argentinians etc....he's especially unlucky with Rome where Volandri, Gulbis and Chardy beat him in 1st round. in MC he played final so he had his chance

Rome is the most similar surface to RG so it's not the surface given he's the 2nd best clay court player of the past decade. Just outplayed in the matches he lost there.

Yup this year's loss was disappointing. Doubt he gets another chance
