The Tournament:

The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon or The Championships, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is widely regarded as the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts, since 2009 with a retractable roof over Centre Court, and since 2019 over No. 1 Court.

Wimbledon traditions include a strict all-white dress code for competitors and royal patronage. Strawberries and cream are traditionally consumed at the tournament. In 2017, fans consumed 34,000 kg (33 imperial tons) of English strawberries and 10,000 litres (2,200 imperial gallons) of cream.

About London:

London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom. The city stands on the River Thames in the south-east of England, at the head of its 50-mile (80 km) estuary leading to the North Sea. London has been a major settlement for two millennia, and was originally called Londinium, which was founded by the Romans. The City of London, London's ancient core and financial centre—an area of just 1.12 square miles (2.9 km2) and colloquially known as the Square Mile—retains boundaries that closely follow its medieval limits. The adjacent City of Westminster has for centuries been the location of much of the national government. Thirty-one additional boroughs north and south of the river also comprise modern London. The London region is governed by the mayor of London and the London Assembly.

I have to raise an injury concern with Simona Halep her calf injury is still not 100% and had to withdraw from Bad Hamburg tournament.,she said she still hopes to play Wimbledon.

Whenever I smell grass, I think of Pironkova. She is ranked low and so did not get into MD. But, she is in the alternate list and should be playing in Quals. Hope he she makes it to MD and then makes some noise.

So if Simona withdraws then I suppose they would have Serena play the opening match as defending champ on Tues at 1pm.

I am disappointed Serena didn’t play a warm-up she needs to work through the parts of her game that are letting her down during matches during actual match play and not think a practice is going to cut it.

Can you supply the surname of Monica ?
There are two WTA tournaments playing at present

As far as I know there is only one qualification tourney for Wimbledon going on.

Her surname is Niculescu (with possible spelling errors). She has a weird forehand slice stroke which she often uses. Very different from most players on the circuit.

Pironkova blasts through the first round of Quals with a score line of 6-1, 6-0; Hope she makes it through.

Also Radwanska (sister of Aga) and Katie Swan (UK youngster) have won the first round.

Just finishing watching Barty and Halep practicing on grass courts, both ladies are under a 'injury cloud' and did not compete in a pre grass tournaments before Wimbledon,Halep was on the entry list for a grass tournament in Germany though had to withdraw due to the fact her calf injury was not 100%.

Sarah Errani lost in the opening round of Quals.

As many as five American women made it through the 1st round: Vickery, Lepchenko, Liu, McNally, Muhammed.

Pironkova, Monica N, Ursula Radwanska and Katie Swan clear their 2nd round matches.

Americans Vickery, Muhamed and Lepchenko fall in 2nd round.

Pironkova is in tremendous form having lost just four games in two matches put together. She would be the most dangerous floater, if she makes it through.
