Djokovic proves once again what a mental giant he is, this slam is huge, the way he won it, the matches he played, the injury, the struggle, just special.

Agree with everything except, let's be honest here, there wasn't much of an injury since those 2 sets he lost against Fritz.

Yeah, a lot of people were not expecting this result - because they mistakenly believed that Medvedev was facing the same level of shitty opponent he played in his first Major final.

I kind of feel bad for Medvedev because today he was playing someone on another level on the Melbourne court. And he and others had very high expectations for him today based on the poor level of opposition he faced in New York in 2019. That match took away from pointing out his obvious flaws in controlling and closing big matches.
No, that's not the reason they were not expecting this result. The reason is because he's been much, much better against Djokovic before and had won 3 of the last 4 matches they played. Even here in 2019, the first set was close and he won the second set and had entered this event unbeaten in his last 20 matches. THAT is the reason but nice way to rile up the Nadal fans, of which I'm not one of but that first line comment above is pathetic tbh.

I think you’re missing the point. Medvedev’s recent run of form was very impressive, but he was going up against a totally different animal today than he did in his first Major final. In that 2019 US Open match, he squandered an early break lead in the first set that he should have run away with. And then at the start of the 5th he flopped and failed to seize the moment with multiple break points.

Today Medvedev was playing against an opponent that is better than him on the Melbourne court. In his first Major final, he was up against a player that he should have beaten going away. That’s the difference.

Look, I absolutely can't stand Nadal but he'd won the USO 3 more times than Medvedev when they played. That was the difference there. Yes, Medvedev could (not should but could) have converted those break points to lead in the 5th set against Nadal at the 2019 USO but who's to say he wouldn't have lost it again later or even given it straight back like he did here? You think 2-0 means guaranteed win lol? Sorry but no. He had chances in this match today to break also and, when he did, he didn't manage to hold serve. His serving today was crap, his forehand was over hitting and error prone and he bottled it at 5-6 in set 1. Having made the comeback in set 1, the least he could've managed was to get to a TB and lose narrowly and then come out firing on all cylinders to start set 2. Then he had the break to start in set 2 which I fully expected and failed to hold serve and was shocking ever since that and game over.

I agree, injury was only the issue in Fritz match. There were brief moments in Raonic match, but not much, after that he was fully fit for sure.

I think no one expected this kind of a final and I even had Medvedev winning it, too bad it could not be a better match, cause I watch tennis for close and entertaining matches, not this.

I watched only a few minutes of the women's final but seems both were crap finals.

When you’re the better player on a surface, being up 2-0 in the 5th set means you’re in the driver’s seat and probably will win (especially with a big serve like the one Medvedev has). And Medvedev is certainly better than Nadal on hard courts.

Don’t forget that Medvedev was up an early break in the first set of the 2019 US Open final too before gifting it away.
When all is said and done we'll see who is better on hard courts. Again, I hate Nadal but he's won 5 more hard court slams than Medvedev for now. I didn't forget Medvedev was up a break because it means nothing if you give it back. Similarly, even if he got up 2-0 in set 5 against Nadal can you really say with certainty that he'd hold every service game after that? I sure as hell can't going by how crap his serve was today...

Not at slams, and Daniil never faced Novak at this level. Simply too much for him and the others, Novak didn’t decline enough yet!

Nah it was a BS final and in the grand scheme of things , such as the covid era we're living in, bad endorsement to the sport. Both finals were uncompetitive, as was 3 of the four semi-finals. Fairly anti-climatic finish to this years champiopship, unless you are a diehard DJOKOVIC or Naomi OSAKA supporter.
I'd like to know when the next generation of players long been touted to succeed Novak, Rafa and Roger are actually going to step up. And don't bother mentioning Thiem's fluke win at last years USO.

Well done luckily hard court specialist Djokovic winning 12 of 18 slams on 1 surface hard courts. Only 6 outside hard courts which is less than both Nadal 7 and Federer 12.

Djokovic and Nadal are both specialist stat wise get over it only 6-7 slams outside their favourite surfaces. But at least Djokovic has taking Federer down to only maybe grass goat. And even then Sampras better grass court player than Federer so he really has nothing in which he's best at.

Well genius, seeing as you like to go by only numbers, Sampras won 7 Wimbledons and Federer has 8, so far. Go back to school.

This whole decade is weak ffs so you could say the same for every surface.
Sampras is little more skilled than Federer on grass better serve volleys net game movement ECT. it's clear Federer is second on all surfaces now.
