The Tournament

The Abierto Mexicano Telcel, presented by HSBC, is one of the ATP Tour’s most vibrant and player-loved events. An ATP 500 stop, the tournament has been voted the best in its category on multiple occasions (2007, 2017, 2019), reflecting both its organisation and its unmistakable atmosphere.

Originally staged on clay for two decades, the event made a bold switch to striking blue hard courts in 2014, signalling its modern evolution and aligning it more closely with the North American hard-court swing. Since 2022, it has been held at the impressive Arena GNP Seguros, a purpose-built venue that delivers dramatic night sessions under the warm Mexican sky.

The conditions in Acapulco typically favour aggressive baseline play and confident serving, with lively crowds adding to the intensity. Evening matches in particular have become a signature of the event — packed stands, music, and an electric energy that feels closer to a festival than a traditional tennis tournament.

Set in the coastal resort city of Acapulco, the tournament combines elite sport with spectacular scenery. The Pacific backdrop, tropical climate, and late-night buzz give the week a distinct personality on the calendar.

The 2026 edition, running from 23 February to 1 March, continues a tradition of high-quality competition in one of the Tour’s most visually striking and atmospherically charged destinations.

Acapulco

Acapulco de Juárez, commonly called Acapulco, is a city, municipality and major seaport in the state of Guerrero on the Pacific coast of Mexico, 380 kilometres (240 mi) south of Mexico City. Acapulco is located on a deep, semicircular bay and has been a port since the early colonial period of Mexico's history. It is a port of call for shipping and cruise lines running between Panama and San Francisco, California, United States. The city of Acapulco is the largest in the state, far larger than the state capital Chilpancingo. Acapulco is also Mexico's largest beach and balneario resort city.

The city is one of Mexico's oldest beach resorts, which came into prominence in the 1940s through to the 1960s as a getaway for Hollywood stars and millionaires. Acapulco was once a popular tourist resort, but due to a massive upsurge in gang violence and murder since 2014 it no longer attracts many foreign tourists, and most now only come from Mexico itself. It is the deadliest city in Mexico and the second-deadliest city in the world, and the US government has warned its citizens not to travel there. In 2016 there were 918 murders, and the homicide rate was one of the highest in the world: 103 in every 100,000. In September 2018 the city's entire police force was disarmed by the military, due to suspicions that it has been infiltrated by drugs gangs.

Amercian Q Kypson gets the biggest win of his career upsetting de Minaur (2) and 2 time former champion, 61 67(4) 76(4). this was his first tour level win since IW in 2024
This was the first time de Minaur was competing since claiming the Rotterdam title 2 weeks ago, so I will give Alex a pass

So another ignominious loss for Ruud.

I am still going to give him a pass due to being a new dad, quite frankly I thought when he came back he would go and play on some of the clay tournaments in progress, lets see how he goes next tournament

Injury, yes, new fatherhood, no. Why? Because his wife home getting no sleep? He should be home, helping her out, and not in Mexico losing tennis matches. :lulz1:

Flavio Cobolli Forza! his 2nd ATP500 title and 3rd title overall, defeating Tiafoe 76(4) 64 it was a really good match especially in the 1st set
This is Flavio's first hard court title and he will move up to No 15 in the live rankings
Flavio managed to keep his shirt on, and didnt rip it open, thank goodness :) he found his game this week in Mexico!
