The Tournament:

WTA World No.5 Sloane Stephens headlines the field.

The 25-year-old former US Open champion was the winner of the tournament in 2016, when she claimed the crown by defeating Caroline Garcia, 6-3, 6-0.

Although Stephens is the only previous winner in the draw, she will be joined by Australian Open semifinalist Danielle Collins at the event, which will run through February 25 until March 3.

Four of the current WTA Top 30 players will be involved, including Mihaela Buzarnescu, Hsieh Su-Wei and Donna Vekic.

Among the other North American stars taking part are Sofia Kenin, Olympic champion Monica Puig of Puerto Rico and Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard.

Two-time defending champion Lesia Tsurenko, however, will not defend her title for a third time in the hard-court event, in which she has defeated Kristina Mladenovic and Stefanie Vögele in the finals of 2017 and 2018 respectively.

The tournament was introduced to the ATP Tour in 1993, and began on the WTA Tour in 2001. It was played on outdoor red clay courts until 2013. The change to hard courts was introduced in 2014.

About Acapulco

The oldest and best known of Mexico's beach resorts, and located on its west coast, the city is set on a large bay, backed by high-rises and the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. Acapulco once had a cache as a playground of the rich and famous, most notably in the 1950s-60s, hosting Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Frank Sinatra, and Brigitte Bardot, among others. It is beautifully situated, and still famous for its nightlife.

Acapulco is relatively close to Mexico City, a mere three-and-a-half hours drive. It is situated in a natural bay and very popular for watersports and aquatic activities.
