I think there were some brand name issues. Whether with FIDE or Bobby Fischer's estate. Safer to come up with something new and avoid all of that
It’s a damn good question regarding the naming. I was wondering why they wouldn’t keep it as Fischer Random as well given it pays a bit of homage to one of the greats…even if he was kind of an insane piece of crap lol. And maybe it is about the estate. Chess960 sounds lame so I do like Freestyle Chess better.

I forget…do either of you play on chess.com? My new name is WrathofAchilles85 if you guys are ever on. I stopped streaming a long time ago as my behavior probably isn’t great if my employer ever saw it. And related to that my old account was banned for supposed poor sportsmanship.

^I let my subscription lapse on all chess sites. The simple truth is that I don't have the time. Last year I went thru an inventory of things I subscribe to, and how often I use them. Netflix, chess sites, Sky etc.. I dumped all of them (there were more). What's the point when I don't use any of them for more than an hour every month? Saved myself over £200 per month when all of the services were added up. It's crazy! I called it my financial colonoscopy :face-with-tears-of-joy:

lol I admire that discipline! I did gather up the energy to call my cable company and try to get a few sports channels so that I can see the rest of the NBA playoffs.

To give you an idea how screwed up things are here, I currently have over 100 channels, none of which I really watch, but if I want sports channels I need to switch to the package where I only have 10 channels but I get to pick them. That package (10 channels) is $50+ more per month than having 100+ channels. And since I bundle cable and internet I’d be saving like $10 per month to not have cable altogether. I said fuck it on principle and am not bothering to pay the extra $50+. Maybe I will go to some sports bars for the finals at this point.

Wait, your behaviour? All we see is cheese pieces, no? Were you trolling opponents in the comments? :lulz1:

I wouldn’t call it trolling but some pointed comments to some people :) Call me old school but when I started playing 20+ years ago in online blitz there are mini-matches. The guy who loses always can have a rematch if they want. Oftentimes the one and dones these days are people who dirty flag people on top of it. So I “insulted” enough people to get tossed.

WrathofAchilles85 has permanently muted chat so it’s worked alright for me haha. The thing that sucks is that if you are muted they don’t let you play titled players aside from ArenaKings each Wednesday. I should mention I have a shared account with my brother, GizmoSummers. I know not the most ethical thing but my bro is a 2200 on there usually so it gives him a chance to play higher rated players, mostly masters. And I have Gizmo up to my normal rating so when my brother plays he just drops a bunch of points. It’s way worse the other way around if I play as a 2200 obviously.

wow! That was a painful loss by Magnus to Gukesh. I wonder how it affects their match ups going forward.

Was just about to post about the game. It is very rare for Magnus to throw a game like that. I don’t think it affects their matchups much going forward but maybe it helps with the young champ’s confidence overall as he’s had a few rough tournaments lately.

This is awesome stuff, it’s what chess does to us all.
Here’s another incredible angle of that incident. Shocking!

that time control needs to be used more to get drama back into classical chess! I think those guys are good with each other. They both understand the strong emotions. Gukesh knows that it was never directed at him

Wonderful try from Levon, but I don’t think Kramnik has the courage to admit he’s wrong

We can only hope but Vlad is a lost cause. The man literally seems to start with the assumption that any red hot streak = program. One of his many issues is that I don’t think he factors in the sheer volume of games played online. Guys like Naka and other top guys are still allowed to have red hot streaks where they are playing above their normal level, and you’ll get some crazy streaks when they are playing thousands and thousands of blitz games every year. I’m sure Vlad would be that dude that if proven right 1 out of 100 times would be saying “see that”. He is the ultimate cartoon figure at this point.

I don’t often get excited about a win in chess but did have a recent nice win over Nigel Short in 3 minute blitz which definitely got me pumped.

Nigel was also the target of one of my all-time favorite quotes. Soon after Short shockingly beat Karpov to qualify for a WC match with Kasparov the latter said: “It will be Short and it will be short.” Brutal arrogance of Kasparov lol.

Great result, well done! A world champion contender! That was the first chess match I really followed, I think it was on Channel 4, and I was hooked.

Even though the game was only 3 minutes, did you have time to get nervous? Did you have any particular line of attack against him? I imagine it focussed your mind when you knew who you were facing?

Thanks buddy! With any game of chess I treat it as life and death so I always feel dialed in. With that said there definitely is extra excitement if I’m playing a big wig. With players that are better than me for the most part I feel the biggest difference is openings. So I do try to take more time in the opening against them than I normally do, and add to that the fact that it’s almost impossible to turn around a terrible position against a stronger player and it’s that much more important. I hate playing Oleksandr Bortnyk if you are familiar with him. He just plays so fast and then I’m down bad on time and quickly in trouble. I beat him the first time I played him and since then I have 2 draws and more than 10 losses. He is a good example of what I’m talking about, I rarely survive the opening in good shape and when I do I’m still down big on time.

Not sure if it let you play over the game I had with Short but I had a pretty mediocre but not ever a really bad position. I quietly opened up a dangerous attack with f4 and having active rooks. Short blundered badly with taking my Knight on h5, clearly missing that I could double up rooks on g file and it was game over quickly. With that said, I almost lost on time as I checkmated him with about 4 seconds on my clock and I was playing on my cell phone and it’s hard to move fast. I rarely play on laptop but have recently started switching over after a bad couple weeks of play, it definitely is better playing on that vs a phone. So to answer one of your questions, I do get nervous as hell if I’m beating a good player and am low on time lol. Would’ve been brutal to lose to Short on time with mate a few moves away.

I went over the game. I was surprised at his blunder as it's a blind spot I have quite often. Knight sacrifices on h6 or h3 happen against me a lot!. When he built up space on the queenside in the opening while capturing your light squared bishop it became a game I would have hated to play as white. I liked the fact you just took it in your stride and built up your kingside potential. If anyone had told me that you would have a passed pawn (admittedly weak) on the a-file later on, I would have told them they were lying! Fun game! :)
