According to Serbian media, the reason the Belgrade Open ( which the Djokovic family runs) was moved to Athens, Greece this year due to Djokovic being in conflict with Vucic's government after showing support to student protests.
Novak will likely play in Greece in November ( no wonder Novak and family holidayed in Greece this year)

Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from Cincinnati, it appears he wont be playing any lead up tournament before the USO
I am not surprised as he was still seen holidaying in Greece and the Greek Islands
I think for Djoker this is a strange move, or a sign that he’s already effectively retired, but will play the USO and hope the stars align. I thought he’d give himself a warm up tourney at least, but anyway, good that he’s enjoying himself. I reckon Australia in January might be his last goodbye…

What were the students protesting about?

There is the Salem-Winston tournament prior to USO, I cant see him entering that just before a major,
I think Novak was given a bit of a wake up call at Wimbledon, I know he made the SFs still he was beaten in 3 sets by Sinner,
Novak said after this years Wimbledon he still wants to play there in 2026

Not 100% certain something to do with the current government, I will check to see any further news
That’s interesting, and Novak supports them. Glad it wasn’t something banal and modish like we have in Ireland and America…

Pity he didn’t reach the final this year, in retrospect, but I hope he plays as long as he can. Poor old Rafa limped slowly out, a Spartan warrior, carried off on his shield..

On January 12th, around 20,000 students and citizens gathered in front of the Consitutional Court of Serbia in Belgrade, demanding the prosecution of those responsible for the canopy collapse and expressing their support to the school workers union which announced a possible general strike

Darren Cahill said he thinks the courts in Cinncy are playing 'slower and gritter' compared to last year, still low bouncing.

Novak also skipped the entire NA swing last year. In hindsight, I think 2023 is probably his last full season. I think he will play the next 3 years, but will focus on his favorite tournaments, such as the Australian Open and Wimbledon. The lead up to slams (such as the clay swing and the NA swing) are not really going to be a priority for him, and he will probably skip the French Open (and possibly even the US Open) going forward. I believe the records Novak want are the ones Roger has: (1) Australian Open match wins, (2) Wimbledon wins, and (3) Wimbledon titles. The first two are certainly attainable in 2026, the last one is probably going to be tough, but I think he will give himself at least 2-3 more cracks at it.

If Novak is going to win a slam going forward, it's probably going to be at the Australian Open or Wimbledon.

I cant see Novak winning at the AO or Wimbledon quite frankly, that is pie in the sky thinking, he showed his age at this years Wimbledon, he was beaten by Sinner in 3 sets.
Alcaraz and Sinner are playing at a different level from the rest of the Top Ten
Novak is presently ranked at No 6, depending on further results this year he could slip further.

He’s always going to be a man who waits in the long grass like a crocodile. Soon as Rafa suffered his final injury Novak hoovered up another improbable career slam, using the postal service. He’s been blessed in his career, he’ll hope his luck holds out. Hopefully he doesn’t come a cropper due to a “dodgy streak…”

I honestly feel Novak knows his days are numbered regarding winning slams,, I read between the lines after his press conference at Wimbledon
If he wants to persist in playing that is his decision, he has nothing else to prove.

A tennis friend texted me
Novak will now 'vulture a 250 tournament in Greece in November seeing that his family tournament has moved from Belgrade to Greece:)

I will have to check on that because Top Ten players are only allowed to enter a number of 250 tournaments

Cincinnati Update:
OUT: Djokovic, Korda, Djere, SE Spot
IN: Nishioka, Tabilo, Gaston, McDonald
Not shocking about Novak, but Seb Korda withdrawing suggests he's still suffering with injury, though I have found no news since grass. His career has been derailed by them, just as it was getting going. Such a shame.

There's no way you can think the 2nd tier now is worse than in the early 2010s. If players in the 2nd tier include David Ferrer and JMDP, then take for example in 2012, Ferrer finished the year ranked #5 with 76 match wins and 7 titles, and JMDP finished the year #7 with 65 match wins and 4 titles. Outside of Carlos, no one this year has a chance at reaching 65 match wins (the 2nd most is Alex De Minaur and Alex Zverev, with 35 and July is finished).

Back in the Big 3 days, you needed close to 50 match wins to finish in the Year End Top 10. There's a chance that Carlos is the only player that reaches 50 match wins this year.
You're taking one metric, match wins, and applying it to only a comparison of 2025 and 2012. We can mess with numbers all we want, but we can't define any era by a single year, or arbitrary narrow comparisons and single stats.

Anyhow, I haven't made up my mind either way, as far as the 2nd tier now (or say, the last half decade) vs 2010-15ish. At the least I think it is arguable, and depends upon which specific years. It is a bit like trying to compare two paint splatters for coverage: the patterns are too different, the talent dispersed differently.

On a side note, I am reminded of a recent conversation between Andy Roddick and Chris Eubanks in which they talked about the game changing within the last year or so, with players hitting the ball harder than before. Maybe it is rackets, or maybe we're going into an era in which players play even harder, but with less matches played. Sort of like how in baseball, only a handful of pitchers throw 200 innings, when that used to be the baseline for a full-time starter. The average fastball has increased by something like 5 mph in the last 10-15 years...which is a huge increase, and it is leading to fewer innings.

Just read that Seb Korda's stress fracture to his shin during the clay season and still bothering him that he had to miss Wimbledon is still an issue sad to say
