"New" tournament in Istanbul - well not true - it's a returning tournament which has been paused while the year end championship has been held there. This tournament is outdoors and on hardcourt with a beautiful stadium:

The main attraction in this tournament is my babe Caroline Wozniacki together with TSVETANA PIRONKOVA, DONNA VEKIC, KLARA KOUKALOVA just to name a few. A little tougher playerfield than in Bucharest. Main draw will be visible sometime Sunday. So hard court and the first test.

Perhaps I should name a few more - how about FRANCESCA SCHIAVONE, ROBERTA VINCI, BELINDA BENCIC, BOJANA JOVANOVSKI, PEER - are you convinced now? - great field.

A little history

The first edition, held in 2005, was won by American Venus Williams. In the final she beat the young Czech talent Nicole Vaidišová in straight sets: 6–3, 6–2.

The following year the young Israeli player Shahar Peer beat Russian Anastasia Myskina to win the Istanbul title.

Russian Elena Dementieva won the 2007 event, leading Frenchwoman Aravane Rezaï 7–6(5), 3–0 before she retired, allowing Dementieva to win the title.

In 2008 Dementieva failed to defend her title, losing in the final match to second-seeded Agnieszka Radwańska of Poland in straight sets.

In 2009 Vera Dushevina won her first WTA singles title with a straight sets victory in the final over Lucie Hradecká.

Garanti Koza has built the new "Cocoon World of Sports Arena" where the "Istanbul Cup 2014" will be held. 6000 spectators on center court (later with withdrawable roof). I don't actually know if all courts are built but here is a picture of the main court and surroundings as it looks like or will look like - nice isn't it:

It is interesting to note that ATP has recently a sanctioned a 250 tourney to Turkey.
That will also be played in Istanbul. But, apparently in a different venue, as it is supposed
to be played on clay.

Vinci is playing today in Romania, will she make it here?

She's probably first playing Wednesday as I think Caroline will, so she'll make it. It's not that far ;)

How did they managed to put Caro and Bencic in R1? It should have been the final. This may be the match of the tournament.

That's the luck of the draw and Bensic is ranked as #62 that's why. Again it's hard court and Caroline has to beat them all to get back into the top.

Weather forecast for Istanbull:

On the way she can even visit Constanza (Simona home town) for some "Simona inspiration". They will soon call the town Simonanza ;)

This tournament is well serviced TV wise sending from centercourt and other courts today. English commentator. If you can't see a tv channel then use the draculastream:

http://www.drakulastream.eu/ and press the tennisbutton. Fairly good quality. Starting out with a postponed match from yeasterday: Pliskova - Ozgen - three 1st round matches follow later - see order of play.

Kristyna Pliskova had to play 2 matches today! This was to qualify...
She didn't make it.

The reason for two matches is that she was in the final in doubles in Bucharest Sunday. She could have withdrawn from Istanbul but chose to battle through today and lost the second match. Konjuh played a good match. Jovanovski was in big trouble against Van Uytvanck - lost first set 16 - came back in second 64 - third set was a bunch of errors from both players winning each others serves but luckily Jovanovski pulled through and won 75.

45 minutes it took to eliminate Suisse's new hope Bencic. She was given her breakfast allready as she was sent away with a double bagel 60 60. Terriffic tennis lesson from Wozniacki. 1st serve % for the match 71% with 9 aces. I think we'll see a Caroline in superform for the hardcourt season - which began today for her. Bravo Carolinbe it was a pleasure to watch:clap:clap:clap

Caroline Wozniacki records her 3rd career double bagel over Belinda Bencic in Istanbul. (Edina Gallovits, New Haven '09, KC Chang, USO '10). Bencic won only nine points on her serve.
