The teams for mixed doubles are decided in Tokyo after the players arrive. In other words, nobody can come to Tokyo just for participating in mixed doubles. You get your entry through either singles or doubles and then you are considered if you make the cut. The cut is based on the sum of the rankings (lowest of singles or doubles rankings) of the two players.

While we don't really know exactly who is going and who is not, on a quick glance of the teams of various countries leads to several interesting and tough pairs. I am listing them below. Please note that this is pure speculation at this time. However, I did not include any person already known not to participate in the Olympics. You can see here the
official entry list organized according to countries in alphabetical order released on 9th July 2021.

The format is too simple. Only 16 teams. Four matches only. Each match is three sets. But the third set, if needed is a super tie-breaker instead of a regular set.

1. AUSTRALIA - D-Minor and A-Barty
2. BELARUS - Ivashaka and Azrenka
3. CANADA - FAA & Bianca (Shapo not going)
4. GERMANY - Sasha and Kerbie
5. UK - Andy and Konta
6. GREECE - Tits and Sakkari
7. HUNGARY - Fucs and Babos
8. ITALY - Berretini and Camila
9. JAPAN - Nishikori and Naomi
10. POLAND - Hubi and Iga
11. RUSSIA - Med and Pavly
12. SPAIN - PCB and Garbage
13. SWITZERLAND - Fed and Bencic
14. USA - Tiafoe and Coco Gauff

p.s. Bottom line is that it won't be a walk in the park for Switzerland by any means.

Currently, Fed is ranked #9 and Belinda is ranked #11. The sum is 20. They have a good chance of getting a direct entry in view of that. If the sum is less than or equal to 16, entry is guaranteed (subject to max of two teams from the same country). If the sum is less than or equal to 32, there is a good chance of making the cut. What complicates the arithmetic is that there will be two ATP players with the same ranking and two WTA players with the same ranking (as the ranking in question here is the best of singles ranking and doubles ranking).

Given that there are only 16 teams, there won't be any easy match. Even the opening round will be a tough match.

Finally, in view of the super tie breaker (and no regular third set), there will be an element of luck involved also.

This olympics is pathetic with so many good players withdrawing.

They should have cancelled the whole olympics.

TOKYO, July 12 (Reuters) - Olympic host city Tokyo entered a new state of emergency on Monday, less than two weeks before the Games begin amid worries about whether the measures can stem a rise in COVID-19 cases.

Organisers last week announced that spectators would be banned from nearly all venues. Spectators from abroad were already banned months ago, and officials are now asking residents to watch the Games on TV to keep the movement of people, which could spread contagion, to a minimum.

Opinion polls have consistently shown the Japanese public is concerned about going ahead with the Games during the pandemic.

Quite frankly I would not be going,I am glad Rafa is not going,he has nothing to prove already has Gold in singles and doubles. The Host city has had rising cases of COVID,the reason they have put the Olympics into a State of Emergency for the whole 2 weeks. Our Aussie athletes have had both COVID vaccinations,I hope all athletes going to Tokyo are fully COVID vaccinated.
We here in Sydney are in lock down in a very bad outbreak of the delta covid strain which is highly contagious and is air borne,we have people in hospital a lot under 45 years of age are and on ventilators, a few deaths, also this delta variant spreads quickly than the first COVID strain back in March 2020.

It’s impossible to take you seriously when you use these childish nicknames in a list or table. This is supposed to be the entry list for the
Olympics, FFS.

Breaking News: Federer says he will not be participating in Olympics as he “experienced a setback" with his knee during the grass-court season.

Hope it is minor, whatever it may be.

Further news regarding Roger not playing at the Olympics,to me,in hindsight is a good decision,if his knee is still bothering him.
Roger will go into rehab for his knee.Roger still hopes to play a lead up tournament before the USO.

Kerbie withdraws from Olympics saying she needs rest. At this rate, members of this forum might be invited to fill in the slots.

Many teams in the OP are not viable anymore due to one or more players with drawing. At this time, I think Australia and Greece should be considered the favorites in this event.
