Greatest turnarounds in sports

Nothing lie a good turnaround in a sports match. One team down and out or others scoring last minute winners or teams making great comebacks.

What are your best memories of great turnarounds.

Here's a few great ones that stick out for me:

Liverpool 3 AC Milan 3 (European Cup Final, 2005). My team, Liverpool, dead and buried and down 0-3, came back to level and then win on penalties. Murat72 was at this match, lucky fella!

Man City 3 QPR 2 (Premier League, 2012)

City needed to win the last match of the season at home against Queens Park Rangers to win their first title in 44 years. Forever under the shadow of their neighbours Man United, it was a massive day for anybody connected with the club - particularly for the reason, that if they didn't win, United would be champions (again).

City were losing 1-2 after 90 minutes and then scored twice in injury time to seize the title out of the hands of their rivals.

Bayern Munich 1 Man United 2, 1999 European Cup Final

I hate Man United and was rooting for Bayern, but in line with the subject it's up there with the best. Two goals in the last minute and injury time after being outplayed all match secured the European Cup.

good list - seeing the title, ManU over Bayern was the first to come to mind. i was watching at a friend's place, with his dad (all ManU fans). his dad was kind of sick at the time, and went to bed about 80 mins into the game. after the turnaround, we immediately raced up to his room. my friend's mom was like "no, he was tired, you got to let him rest" - obviously, she didn't understand. he was nowhere near tired after hearing the score.
watched it on german tv as well. moderator and experts afterwards just sitting there, speechless. got to admit i enjoyed that one

Larry Johnson's 4 point play vs the Pacers was another one that i saw and thoroughly enjoyed live. wasn't the biggest deficit or the closest in regards to 'last second'-ness. but it was a big one, and for Grandma Johnson to do it, i loved it.

Well spotted John - I've moved it!

Another one that springs to mind was Robert Horry's 3 pointer on the buzzer for the Lakers against the Kings in the 2002 in the Western Conference Finals. Lakers were 20 points down at one stage. I'm not really a basketball fan but used to enjoy watching the Lakers/Celtics in the 80s and always had an affinity with the Lakers and the great Magic Johnson.

Never watched much since the 80s but got caught up in the Lakers/Kings rivalry in the early 00s and got back into it a bit. Don't watch any now.

Lendl turning a two-set deficit against McEnroe was huge. I know, Lendl is known now for clay, but Mac didn't just own him back then, he'd just wiped the floor with him on clay a couple of weeks previously. And now he was doing it again.

Very rarely I leave a big match, but that one was over, right?

Also the 1993 playoffs with the Houston Oilers blowing a 35-3 halftime lead to the Buffalo Bills and their backup qb.

For baseball it isn't a single game but Boston coming back from 0-3 vs. New York was crazy. Never had happened before and if memory serves me right the Yankees had the lead going into the 9th inning of both games 4 and 5.

One of the more impressive comebacks that I have witnessed was between Sabatini -Fernandez. Sabatini got the first 6-1, was leading 5-1 in the second when Fernandez decided to join in the fun, came back, won the third 10-8. I was heartbroken...because I was pretty much in love with Sabatini at the time.

In cricket some matches that come to mind are the 2 test matches that England and India won after following on .

That India vs Australia match was a huge win for us . No one gave our team half a chance before that series and it was reinforced also by the demolition we recieved in the first test . We were badly losing in the second but one of the all time great partnerships between Laxman and Dravid got us into the match and we pulled it out . We took the momentum and won the series as well in the third . Turnaround in a match as well as series

For another sport I watch F1 , I would say Kimis win in Suzuka 2005 was ultimate . His win in Brazil 2007 to get the championship was also special because he was given the outside chance and he pulled it out

What about that Australian Open final in 2002 between Hingis and Capriati . I did not see that but I heard it was one of the best turnarounds . I believe Hingis never recorved from that and she wasnt the same again

The first video is about the quarterfinal match between defending world champion Wang Liqin and Austrian hope Werner Schlager at the 2003 table tennis world championships in Paris. I attended that match and watched it live in the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy. It was the best atmosphere ever. Schlager was down 2-3 in sets and 6-10 in the 6th set, yet he saved 4 match points in a row and won the match in 7 sets. He got lucky with the first match point against him, but the way he saved the other 3, especially the last one (with being totally out of balance and just instinct play) was simply ridiculous. In the first video it starts from 07:35min onwards.

The 2nd video is about the the final set of his semifinal that he won 14-12 in the seventh set after saving matchpoints again in another classic drama. He then went on to win the finals as well (3rd video) against probably the best defender in table tennis of all time. That southkorean dude was the equivalent of Nadal. It was a gutsy and an inspiring championship run against all odds as the chinese players were pretty much unbeatable back then. They were throwing the kitchen sink at him all the time and yet he prevailed again and again and again. Ridiculous story. The guy became a hero in Austria.
