Chuck out there playing footsie w/ Hair Dude drops the opening TB. He had chances to break and serve for set. You can't give these lower ranked players a foothold especially when they have a win over you. But like @Jelenafan says, it would be really boring if his matches went according to script every time.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but everyone but Sinner is lower-ranked than Alcaraz. Rublev is not some journeyman, and he was playing well. Yes, Alcaraz does seem to run a bit hot and cold with his focus, but he usually gets there.

Mens QFs Bottom Half,

Fritz (5) vs KAA (17)
Alcaraz (2) vs Norrie
Fritz v. Khachanov seems to favor Fritz, but by little. Silent K playing very well of late. They are so similar, it's who shows up on the day. I think Fritz has more tools, and is trending in confidence.

Alcaraz surely over Norrie.

I never said he was a scrub or a jourrneyman, but he is out of the top 10. He does have a recent win over Carlos and that would give anyone confidence

I said when the draw came out Fritz had a very good draw and has a chance to make the SFs
Well he has his chance now to make the SFs
Everyone was honed in on Draper's draw and look how that turned out. I wasnt fully convinced if Draper could make the QFs
Also I did say when the draw came out Zed had a tricky draw, and he could not make it past the first round could he?
Draws are on paper something people tend to forget.
I will be 'astounded' if Carlos does not make the final

Next time someone says the 4 seed is a huge advantage over the 5 seed, I will point to this draw. Fritz doesn't really deserve to still be in the tournament. He played 5 sets in both of his first 2 matches. If Fritz got the Draper draw, there's no way that he would have defeated Cilic with the way he played against Diallo.

Anyone top player would have made the QF with Fritz's draw. I'm pretty sure Draper beats Diallo, and quite easily. If Draper can't beat Diallo in a slam tournament, then he isn't worthy of a Top 5 ranking.

That said, they should make the draw standard ranking, instead of random. 1 plays 8, 2 plays 7, 3 plays 6, and 4 plays 5 in the QF. There's no reason why a 5-seed should have a way more cakewalk draw than the 4-seed. Also remember, Fritz backed into the 5 seed by losing in the first round of Queens, while Draper earned the 4 seed by making the semis.

Again you are making " Woulda Coulda Shoulda; assumptions thats why I said and say ' a draw is on paper only' and things happen in draws and to seeded players and their rankings?
How do you know another top player would have made the QF with Fritz draw? again your making assumptions?
I go on facts and what happened in any draw period with players and their rankings.
Fritz was given a favorable draw and has made the most out of it, he has made the QF and has a chance like I did state when the draw was made he has a good chance of making the SF and if he defeats KK in his QF he will achieve just that.

Cobolli doesn't finish off Cilic in str. sets! Marin holds on as a vet who's made the final taking 3rd set! Cobolli's a hot # in more ways than one! :wedding:
Finally, we agree on one player, in terms of attractiveness. ;)

Marin seemed to be having one of those age-related slump days...you're playing great throughout the tournament, then you're just not. Tons of UFEs. But he buckled down in the TB. Now Cobolli may be getting nervous, and Cilic more confident, as the vet who has been there. Flavio has never yet lost a match he lead 2 sets to love, btw.

I am not watching Novaks match cause I am waching Cobolli v Cilic match live
Why is Alex de Minaur leading Novak 4-1? I am just SB his match?
Make that 5-1 now
Okay my eyes are not deceiving me and I am wearing my glasses
Alex de Minaur just handed Novak a bread stick in the 1st set?
I know Novak at times starts slow in his matches, anyway early days

Cobolli got it done in 4, in a TB in the 4th. He's been rather the revelation of the tournament. Has only dropped serve 2 times the whole tournament, they said? Once today. He's playing great.

Flavio Forza defeats Cilic in 4 sets to make his first QF in a GS!
I was quietly confident he would win today, he is good on faster surfaces
Well done Flavio

Like clockwork, Novak turns the tables and wins the 2nd set. How predictable.

BTW
Flavio will make his Top 20 debut after Wimbledon
Just reading some comments from Gill Gross, he said Flavio, whose comments I agree with, Flavio has always had great technique on both wings, a good athlete, but 2 of the things that have held him back has been his discipline and his average serving, though he has developed quickly on those 2 fronts
Gill said he sees him as a potential Top Tener

We're in the Golden Age of Italian men's tennis! I know it is Sinner and then a big gap, but there's still a bunch of good Italians. Current live rankings:
1. Sinner
7. Musetti
19. Cobolli
36. Berrettini
40. Sonego
44. Arnaldi
55. Darderi
63. Bellucci
94. Nardi

Only Berrettini and Sonego are 25 or older. Jannik is already the greatest Italian ever, and I think Musetti at least has a chance of becoming #2, or at least #3 behind Adriano Panatta, who is on the lower side of one-Slam winners.

Top Italian Players by GOAT Points (through 2024, with GOAT ranking; active in bold)
35. Jannik Sinner 119 GP

94. Adriano Panatta 39
121. Matteo Berrettini 28
167. Fabio Fognini 18

187. Corrado Barazzutti 15
249. Paolo Bertolucci 8
286. Lorenzo Musetti 7
297. Lorenzo Sonego 6

331. Andrea Gaudenzi, Andreas Seppi, Marco Cecchinato 5

Musetti's already doubled his GP this year so is just behind Barazzutti at 14, with a good chance of passing him and Fognini by year's end. Meaning, he's probably already the 4th best Italian of the Open Era - or will be soon. He'll probably need to win Slam and/or some Masters to pass Berrettini and Panatta.

I want to see where he is with the 2025 points added. I'd bet he's somewhere in the 16-20 range now. If he wins Wimbledon, you could even make the argument that Jannik in the lower half of the Top 10 of GOAT list. Kind of like you could with Rory, in golf, after he won the Masters.

From what little I saw of de Minaur, he was playing "out of his mind;" keeping up w/ Novak winning points that went over 30+ strokes! It was very entertaining w/ the dropshots, lobs, and a ton of BH slicing & dicing! It took me back for a few minutes! It very well could have gone 5 sets, but Alex didn't capitalize on brk pt. to go up 5-1 in the 4th! Twas all downhill after that even though he made Novak work for it in 4 sets & over 3+ hrs.! :astonished-face:
