I think my only concern about Fonseca--aside from the specter of injury that is a concern for all young players, until they establish themselves--is that there's a quality of slim margins with his play. He can do so much, but everything seems to require slim margins: making those winners, getting his angles. Fonseca shows good defense, but his game is primarily offensive. He's going to have spells where he might be "Fonshanka"...and/or get flustered by just missing his shots.

Right now, he almost reminds me a bit of "Federer 2.0"...the later version of Federer that had lost a bit on defense, and thus couldn't fall back on it when his shots weren't there. We might see runs like Roger's 2017 when he was hitting so well and nigh unbeatable, but also 2013, when he was shanking all over the place and couldn't find a rhythm. Just speculating, though. He's got a lot of room to grow, still.
Funny , to me Fonsenca reminds me more of pre -2003 Federer.

I can see that, too. Later Federer is just more in my memory, and I was also a much more casual tennis fan back in Roger's early years - the type that watched a Slam final or two a year, but didn't follow the sport tournament by tournament like I do now. I was a much bigger baseball fan back then...still am, but tennis overtook it as my favorite sport to follow about 15 years ago or so.

This is a crazy stat for Joao Fonseca, he is trying to become the youngest man to beat a Top Ten player on grass since Mario Ancic defeated Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2002, when he tries to defeat Fritz Taylor in their match which was suspended to bad light at Eastbourne, their match is tied at 1 set all.

If August Holmgren wins his next qualification match to Wimbledon, Denmark will have 4 players in the main round of Wimbledon for the first time in history. The other three being Holger Rune, Clara Tauson and Elmer Møller. What a time for danish tennis.

Tennis is a very small sport in Denmark (only 85.000 registred players in the whole country).

20 yrs. ago we spoke of Belgium this way! Very small population, but had 2 of the best #1 women's tennis players in Justine Henin & Kim Clijster! ;-)

Just a quick summary of the 3rd set between Fritz and Fonseca ( as play is still continuing at Eastbounre and Mallorca QFs)
In very windy conditions at Eastbourne, Fritz got a early break, held onto to it to serve at 5-3 before a late charge from Fonseca, who fought back to 5 all, Fritz again broke and won the match 7-5.Fritz. Fonseca has now a career high of #57 and will now head to Wimbledon for his debut on the grass.

Novak Djokovic lost in straight sets to KAA at the Giorgio Armani Classic 76(4) 64, his only match before Wimbledon ( though I would not take much notice of the loss) he will face Alexandre Muller in his first round match at Wimbledon

Fiero, remember how Borg ushered in all those Swede tennis players in the top 50?

That was the 1st big explosion of talent outside of the US & Australia! Those 2 countries ruled tennis for yrs. w/ Budge in GB & The 4 Musk. in France intervening! Hopman really turned things around in the Penal Colony "down under!" OTTH, the Pro Era grew from just a handful of countries dominating to small nations taking over like Borg heralding Wilander, Edberg, Nystrom, Jarryd, etc., then Martina Navratilova, Jan Kodes, & Ivan Lendl pushing Czech. to the fore w/ Mandlikova, Sukova, Mecir, & Novotna.! Russia had a little ripple of success w/ Morozova & Metreveli & the Russian Fed. producing Zvereva, Kafelnikov, Safin, Safina (sister), etc.! Vilas started a revolution in Argentina, Orantes in Spain, .... I better stop before my head explodes testing it so much at 68 yo! Memories! :face-with-hand-over-mouth::fearful-face::astonished-face::anxious-face-with-sweat:
