I suppose the silver lining about Musetti's withdrawal is now there's a possibility that Jannik Sinner withdraws due to heat exhaustion, an Novak gets another free pass. We get to watch the tennis world explode.

BTW Novak remember is still lucky to be in the tournament, his bad temper was again on show when he hit a ball, which narrowly missed a ball kid, and then gets free pass to QF and was playing like crap in the QF and again gets another pass to the SFs

Sorry Rune's injury was horrific doing his achilles, Lorenzo has had a history of not being able to compete in 5 set matches, you cant compare
Lorenzo has even stated this week it is an area he needs to build on his physical state.
Lorenzo was up 2 sets and looking fine btw, while Novak was playing like Crap
Margaret, it depends on the injury. If it is what people are saying, a muscle strain on the tigh abductor, he had zero chance of scoring one more game and he would simply add months or years to his recovery time by playing on.

Lets see what the injury is first Mrzz, I have had soo many different reports, also Lorenzo's trainer had to go back to Italy for personal reasons the other day.Even Novak said he shouldnt be in the SF as Musetti out played him. Most people were surprised when Lorenzo retired as he was looking good in the 2 sets he played and won,
If it is a tear in his abductor, fair enough, though he has had a history of not being able to compete in 5 sets matches when he has been ahead, dosent retire but gives up, due to his lack of physical training, he said this year it is an area he knows he has to improve in.

BTW,
Ben Shelton, you had no plan, no strategy, running like a headless fly on the court against Jannik, raw power can only get you so far !

This is a 'brutal stat'
Lorenzo Musetti is the first player in the Open Era to retire in GS QF or onwards after taking the first 2 sets.

I thought it might happen to Sinner down to Dmitrov last year at Wimbledon! He was actually saved by an injury just like Novak! It happens! :fearful-face:
If you care to go back and rewatch that match, Jannik fell on his elbow in that match and after that had to wear a elbow sleeve for sometime
Pleae dont make me laugh Novak has been given a free ride to the SFs first his draw, and then a walkover to the QFs and a player who was in total control of the match like Musetti, Novak was playing Crap and again he gets a Get Out Of Jail Free Card
Indeed it does happen LOL! Novak can count himself lucky he is still in the tournament, he was nearly defaulted Again, with his bad temper

The hypocrisy of some as I recall saying that at Wimbledon Dinitrov having to retire with an injury up to 2 sets on Sinner was not a done deal, (ie Sinner was going to come back) and yet poor Musetti is weak for retiring with most likely a very serious condition.

Credit to Djokovic for saying he was “lucky” but it does point one of the reasons while being able to play relatively injury free he trudges on.

Novak can still beat most of the rank & file players in a Slam and once you get to the last week of a Major, you can never predict what can happen.

Hopefully Mussetti has a quick recovery, he must feel so crestfallen.
But aren't these two separate things, and aren't they even mutually exclusive? One could argue that Musetti retired too soon, and also argue that the match was far from over, could they not? In the case of Dimitrov, no one argued he retired too soon, because the injury was clear for all to see. So the discussion/argument was over whether Dimitrov would have won the match, no matter what happened, or if it was too soon to be sure of that. That's a different argument, right?

Anyway, I haven't seen the 3rd set of that match, so can't judge how Musetti looked. But I wouldn't call it "hypocrisy" if someone argued that it was too soon to say that Dimitrov would have won that Wimbledon match, on the one hand, and argued that Musetti quit too soon, on the other. Now, if that same person said that Musetti would otherwise have won it, that would be hypocritical, if you ask me. Just my 2 cents. (Or 10 cents, as Iomaha says. I guess that's inflation!)

The common denominator in both matches is that I was rooting for the fella who retired.

Thanks Moxie

I was viewing the Musetti v Novak match and I do concur with Don Fabio that Lorenzo wasnt sliding well to the ball in later part of the 2nd set, which he won, so I just thought he would be okay, Novak had a MTO for his blister on his foot, not long into the 3rd set, Musetti retired
Novak was playing like crap and if anyone here thinks he wasnt I suggest they get their eyes tested, I actually thought Musetti would win in straight sets and again Novak gets a Get Out Of Jail Free Card

I don't understand the conspiracy! WTF? Are the 'powers that be' making sure Novak has a "winning kick," or something? Too strange! :fearful-face::face-with-head-bandage:

That was a frustrating turn of events, for sure, for those of us who like Musetti, and don't care so much for Djokovic. And when it's harder to see the injury, people get upset. Last year, when Novak pulled out abruptly v. Zverev after one set, he got booed. So, one could argue that, karmically, he had one owing, but two seems a bit much, with the Mensik withdrawal. That IS the kind of luck that an older player needs. Though, Sinner breezed through, so I'm not sure it will help him in the SFs, anyway.

Musetti had every reason to want to stay in that match. Now that your hot Sicilian blood is calmer, I hope you know that. :)

I was soo upset with him, because at the time he retired I wasnt certain what the injury is, physical wise has never been Lorenzo's strong suit and he said that this year, I thought that is it with him, anyway my Sicilian blood is calmer today......:)

No conspiracy. Point here is how severe the injury was. That is, if Musetti was weak or not. No relationship to Djokovic.

Extraordinary scenes yesterday with Lorenzo Musetti defaulting his quarterfinal. Novak goes from RD 32 to Semifinals without winning a set !

Not a good look for generation X or the sport in general.

Hey, take it easy.

There's still plenty of tennis to be played...and enjoyed.

Sinner will thrash Novak in the semifinal. Bring it On :)
