Spizzirri seems like one of the small stories of the AO so far. He's probably too old to be projected as a future star, but the guy can play and could rise into seeding territory at the least.

I don't that he's "too old" if you take into account that he played college tennis and just graduated in 2024. He's getting a late start. I hope he does well.

It's true it's time to get in some night matches, anyway. Though it's been handy being able to watch him at what is a normal hour here.

But speaking of the weather, this reminds me of one of the things I love about watching the Australian Open: that when it's cold and dark here, I can see the people in their summer clothes, sitting in the sun, and fanning themselves. It makes me feel warmer, just to watch. A little bit of summer, in the dead of our winter. Most of the US is getting a big storm this weekend, with arctic temperatures. It's currently -8C here. It was -13 when I went out this morning. Our snow is supposed to start after midnight tonight, and go on through most of tomorrow. Maybe 12"?

Funny, but back in the day, I had the opposite feel since we couldn't see the AO early on! I didn't get Cable until the 80's & we barely got much news out of it w/ so few top stars going "down under!" I always heard of the high winds & bugs! The few matches I did get to see w/ Martina & Chris, it didn't seem too oppresive,, but that was back in Kooyong! A couple women's finals in the 90's & 2000's we started hearing about the heat so bad, the court was softening! Players were dropping like flies w/ injuries! Global warming is probably making it worse! END RANT!

Well, yes, there is the global climate change problem, which is probably why it's so infernally hot in Oz, and why we're having a nearly continent-wide storm here in the US, which is rare. But forgive me if I go with my own glass-half-full version of enjoying the AO.

I don't think there's ever been a player who showed up in the top 100 at 24 and then become a top 5 guy. It is sort of like starting a race late - no matter how fast you run, you're not going to win. I don't even know how talented he is, just that he pushed Sinner, which is impressive, and even if he stalls out in the 20-30 range, that will make him an interesting character - like the Vacherot of 2026.

Please it has been Heat Wave Conditions for days on end with high humidity and I can assure you it isnt great at all, give me Winter anytime of the year at least you can put layers on and get warm, not in these heat wave conditions, you have a cold shower and then start sweating, UGH!
