Just as well Carlos was stopped! I'm sure some would be ready to elevate him to Fedal, Borg, Sampras status already! I'm on board though! He's great & can only improve! I believe like you that Sinner more than likely has max'd out & others will catch up! His reign as #1 won't be that long! After surviving that QF vs Grigor, you have to say LUCK was dripping off Sinner to take this championhip!:fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth::astonished-face:
Well, I don't see luck. Sinner is hard as nails. Amazing mental resilience, all things considered. He believes in himself and wasn't cowed by RG.

I think what did Carlos in was it felt like he was doing more with his serve than he needed to trying to ramp up his mph on his first serve missing more giving Sinner more opportunities. They were fairly even from the baseline.

Sinner dominated the middle of the court, he played a very tactical match
Carlos serve wasnt as good as it was in other matches, I thought at Queens his serve was 'on song' especially the last 3 matches of the tournament

You're kind of all over the place with this, huh? You don't want Alcaraz to get to ahead of himself, or, god forbid, be compared to Fedal. News flash...he and Sinner both are being compared to ATGs. Is this bad? No, it's not. And, at the same time, you say you're on board with Alcaraz. It's rather difficult to see if you're happy with Alcaraz's success, or ready to be your usual contrarian self about it. Which is it? You've been calling for youngsters to come up, or were, until you got so enamored of Novak.

As to Sinner, and luck, you can only deal with what you are presented with. As to that QF v. Dimitrov, I will say again, that guy has been a folder at important moments his whole career. He might well have continued to play the match of his life, certainly on grass, or, Sinner might have fought him all the way back, which is NOT out of the realm of possibility. We'll never know, because Grigor's body ended the match. Which is also a function of being 34. We were barely into the 3rd set, so who knows how it would have played out.

Sinner survived to get to the SF, and played by far the better match today, and deserves the championship title.

Of course I'm all over the place! Do you realize how many realinement to the men's rankings I've gone thru over the last 5 decades?? Now it's the end of the most prolific era that had Fedalovic! A new era has begun w/ 2 worthy rivals taking over in Sincaraz! It's not like what happened after Sampras retired w/ a huge hole in the talent pool! Hewitt #1? Really? That was almost as bad as Caroline Wozniacki holding the WTA #1 ranking for over a yr. w/o winning a major! The men are lucky to have avoided that happening again! :face-with-hand-over-mouth::fearful-face::yawningface::face-with-tears-of-joy:

That's revisionist history. Hewitt and Safin were really good in the early 2000s, even if it was brief. At age 20, they beat Pete Sampras to win the US Open. They deserved their #1 ranking. A huge hole in the talent pool would be if somehow Thomas Johansson held the #1 ranking instead.

Yep Italians are doing well Vince, 2 have 2 top players now in the Top Ten, Sinner and Musetti also Cobolli played well at Wimbledon this year making his first QF, they are all pushing each other to become better players which is good to see

Jannik is good at hard court, however, the last men's champion to repeat at the US Open is still Roger Federer, who won 5 straight from 2004-08.

Here we go, Stats available now on the mens final.

What a great natural rivalry Carlos and Jannik are giving us and will provide for the future, after 12-15 years of here-today-gone-tomorrow talent such as Del Potro, Dominic Theim, Marin Cilic, Stan Wawrinka etc..

and interestingly this years singles champions are two 24 year olds. The runners-up are two 23 years olds.

I suddenly feel very old I have children much older than those 2, in their 30's :) but I am young at heart some that is something in my favor
