It's very kind of you to think that people disagree with me because they have a lot on their mind or are having a bad day. I don't think it's that, though it can sort of seem so.

It could be partially that, though that may not be the whole story. I was just trying to put the point across that there are many reasons why people don't understand others or disagree with others & we shouldn't judge them because unless we've spoken to them properly we can't always know & no one knows what goes on in someone else's head. People disagree with others because they have minds of their own & think for themselves too. They have rights to disagree as long as they respect your opinions, allow you to have yours & know when to agree to disagree. I always try to look at things from all sides, consider all the facts & act in a civilized manner which isn't always easy but I try my best which is all anyone can do.

Lol! I think you're missing nuance mate. I wouldn't characterise my issues with Obsi the Moron as humorous really. The kid made some stupid assertions about Djokovic and didn't like it when I slapped him around a bit. He's now taken to following me around the forum trying to troll me. Not really working as every time he does this he reinforces my conviction that I really hurt his feelings (which I totally wanted to do). I'm not saying it's not funny, it is. But to say we're having a humorous chat is missing the subtext by a mile. I respectfully submit mate, if you're not getting that right you should re-assess some of your other assumptions

I was watching CNN the other day, and some of the data an analyst had compiled was truly disturbing. Apparently, and what shocked me was that this is not just an American phenomenon, more and more people believe that democracy is not necessarily the best system for society. More and more people believe that violence is an acceptable tool in a protest. When you add this to all the information coming out now about Russian tactics during the US elections (and no doubt other elections in Western democracies) - the subversion of social media to influence the thinking of the American electorate - I start to question who actually has come out on top in the aftermath of the ending of the cold war. Talk about asymmetric warfare! Putin has played an absolute blinder. This just makes me loathe the GOP more, because they have been anti-education for such a long time that it has created a fertile ground for climate change denial, fake news and a whole host of other things. I just didn't realise that the political weakness of the left would translate to activists on the left also rejecting some of the basic tenets that make democracy such an effective system. Even professors at American universities are boycotting debates with people whose views they oppose. FFS what about having the intellectual confidence to debate against those you fervently disagree with? At the end of the day if the electorate really is that dumb then democracy really doesn't have much use at all. Depressing!

Democracy is far from perfect... the old "3 wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for breakfast" argument... but it's probably the best system when all said and done. I was trying to think of benevolent dictators who did hit the home run but falling short.

I'm with you mate. But it's fair to point out that the Chinese (and Singaporeans before they went fully democratic) have done a pretty good job developing their economies, without demcracy. I'm thinking that most societies would be ok with benevolent (or even not so benevolent) dictatorships if they got prosperity. The problem in the West is that we're increasingly seeing diminishing returns from our democratic systems and the systems themselves are looking increasingly corrupt

Actually I do. I'm not saying that's what I want. But look around. Most of the people in the world are poor. If you asked them to make a choice between greater prosperity and freedom of speech, we all know what they'll say. We in the West don't have to make such choices so we take it forgranted that our basic freedoms are more important than anything else

I think it's a bit of both to be honest mate. I think that what we've seen in the last few years is the 2nd part of your question... "stuff leaking out", and social media has helped information disseminate (both fake and real) more quickly than ever before. But the first bit you can trace back as far as the early 70s. Developed economies experienced a fundamental restructuring once Nixon ditched Bretton-Woods. You can look at how gini curves across western economies have evolved since then, with income inequality getting worse and worse. Reagan (and Thatcher) made it worse, European democracies have tried to fight it. But what that has done is to infect societies, and it's not shocking that politicians are increasingly a part of this. Just like business men, politicians are getting richer through influence sharing and lobbying. I don't know that things ever go back the way they were. This is the really sad thing, but the end result is that democracy and politics are increasingly getting monetised. You only have to look at the health care saga in the US, a clear majority of voters want to keep the ACA, but GOP donors want the legislation gone. Can you believe that shit? That's not democracy at all, that's a corruption of democracy right there in front of our faces. This is the new normal, and no one is even really outraged about it anymore. And it's not specific to the US

You imbecile, I said Djokovic is better than Federer game-wise. That’s different issue than who is better achievement-wise. If you think it’s crazy to claim that Novak is better that Roger game-wise, then it reinforces my belief about your stupidity.

He's inferior in both unfortunately for you or it wouldn't have taken till Roger was 35 for Novak to go ahead in the h2h obviously enough. Roger also beat him quite handily during Novak's prime at Cinci and Shanghai with a bagel set in the former. So much for superiority when an old man makes a monkey out of you.

   You idiot, Federer’s style of play is far less taxing on body than Djokovic’s and that has allowed him to play unusually well after age 30. If a player is in his prime, it doesn’t mean they play their best tennis in every match during prime (in those matches in Cincinnati and Shanghai Novak’s level was far bellow his best).
