I thought Roger seemed to mentally self-sabotage in that match. When I use the term injustice - with Edberg I felt he had done nothing wrong to lose the match vs Stich. With Fed, I think it was on his mental control. He should have held it together.
that's fair I guess. Although I would argue that Roger had to overcome the incompetence of the umpire. The amount of time he was giving Delpo to challenge was crazy. As for Stich, each tie break he won was due to a net cord or some other lucky break, so I'm with you there

Delpo one felt like an injustice! The umpire let Delpo abuse the challenge system, and Roger got so angry he lost the thread of the match and allowed Delpo to hit bombs. If Roger had kept using the angles he would have won that match comfortably. Truly one of the worst strategic matches of Roger's career:facepalm:
The drop shot at 40-15 in set 2 with set point was absolutely atrocious and set the tone for the end of the match.

Unlike you I don’t like Federer, he annoys me on different levels during his career.

This gold marching band outfit….sooo ridiculous

I fell off my chair laughing at what I described as " Beekeeping/Jelly Fish outfit, which was a Robert Wu Nike Collaboration
I have to give Osaka some points for even walking on court in that 'insane outfit" MEH!

I love these posts because we are all addicted to our convictions, ( moi too!). To me Del Potro was just ultimately mentally stronger than Roger that day, c’mmon Federer was a grownass 4 time repeating champ at Flushing, but those FH bombs by DP were too hard to handle. Those bombs “unhinged” him as much as anything. Challenges are something all players should handle but Roger got more “yips” as the years went on; it happens.

However we are in agreement that the Edberg/Stich match was an injustice.

I humbly stand corrected… ; )

And let me add, Del Potro was making his first Grand Slam final appearance.

In retrospect, that final was a turning point in Roger’s career. I remember watching it live, thinking “Roger, move on from the challenges anger! You know the umpire is not going to undo decisions, so you’re wasting a ton of mental energy on this! Play the next point, and forget about it. You’re self-sabotaging.”

Yes, JMDP was playing at a high level, and his power at that time was intense, but Roger should have won that match. I remember an interview with him a few years ago in which he said that was one of the matches he’d like a do over.

For me, noone.

I do not"hate" any, but the close it gets would be american guy Mark Dickson. Any of you recall him? He didn't achieve significant results in any of the Slams but i recall his great run to the 1983 US open quarter final, losing eventually to Bill Scanlon.

Dickson had a good attacking game but what really annoyed me back then was his stalling inbetween points during his service games. That's not how tennis should be played i remember.

Commentators back in the day would comment on it when covering his matches. Now most of you will think of immediately Ivan Lendl ( during the 1980's) Rafa Nadal or Novak Djokovic (in 2007-2012) . But Dickson was the worst.

And I know you are joking, as you said earlier. You liked the mental giant by the name Petros Sampras.

I know you said you don't actually hate the guy, but if one cares enough to hate a dude no one else remembers, now that is serious hatred, my friend! So you did not get close to "normal" hate with that, you got close to the epic level one!

I had to dig deep to find reasons not hate the guy after that (and I am a fan). So I chose to believe that he lost some pretty serious bet, and still honored it. GOAT stuff.
