Piers Morgan, some shock media personality over in the mother country, has been at it again :astonished-face:

‘Sweet revenge’: Piers Morgan savages Australia after World Cup defeat

Australia’s World Cup hopes came to an end at the hands of England and nobody enjoyed the scenes more than Piers Morgan.
British media personality Piers Morgan is revelling in Australia being knocked out of the Women’s World Cup.
England proved too strong for the Matildas and ran away to claim the 3-1 victory and book their spot in the final where they’ll take on Spain.

As the celebrations began, English fans delighted in the dominant display. But Morgan saw it as an opportunity to deliver potshots at Australia after the Aussies claimed victory in both the Ashes and netball World Cup over England in recent weeks.

He was at his ruthless best in the lead up to the contest as he poured fuel all over the rivalry fire.

“You know what to do Lionesses, make Ashes of the Matildas,” he tweeted.

It was after the win that he took his antics to the next level and once again dragged up the most controversial moment from the recent Ashes series.

“England’s fabulous Lionesses crush Australia’s wilting Matildas 3-1 in their own back yard to reach the Women’s World Cup Final … sweet revenge for the Jonny Bairstow Ashes runout debacle.

Congrats ladies – you’ve made your country proud!” he wrote.

Piers Morgan stuck the boots in

For the benefit of our american friends, at the recent Cricket Ashes series, Australia vs. England , the english batter Jon Bairstow was out stumped because he was outside of his crease (ie line mark), Ultimately, the five test Ashes Cricket series finished as a draw (2 won by australia, two won by England, and 1 other test was washed out by heavy rain on day five) so australia was declared winner by virtue of winning the last test series in 2019.

To put Piers World cup womens football comments in perspective, being beaten by a bunch of professional soccer (excuse me, "football") players in a semi-final is not something that the Australian team should be ashamed of.

England reportedly has over two million women participating in soccer nationally.
Even if 1% of those participants were involved in high-level club competition, the English team can choose about 30 of those players to represent their county. Australia, by contrast, has 1.2 million people - both genders - play soccer re-creationally. We have some national club competition for the men, but it's nowhere near what they have in the U.K.

Soccer in this country is always considered third rate football to Rugby and the Australia Rules Football and with next to no government funding or promotion , unlike the U.K.

I should add some aussie females do play competition for clubs based in europe.

Therefore, imagine for one moment, that England was made up of a bunch of recreationals and part-timers who have only recently been given proper government funding. Would they have advanced to semi finals the way australian matildas had? I don't think that they would.

I say Congrats to the England lioness who deserved their decisive win last night as they looked to have a far superior defense than our maltidas.
Good luck to them in the final as they play Spain , i'll be cheering for the Lionesses.
But all things considered the aussie gals should be very proud of their efforts too, certainly don't need BS by the likes of Piers Morgan.

For almost a month now. The Matildas' has given Football / Soccer a shot in the arm in this country. All they need now is better support from the government.

Footnote: Good one here on how Popular Womens Football in England is. It's been the fastest growing sport since 2019.
As a result, of the Matildas run at this year world cup , will the same boom happen here , I wonder ?

huge television and streaming ratings for both Australia and the UK -

Women's World Cup 2023: England v Australia watched by 7m on BBC TV -

England's Fifa Women's World Cup semi-final win over Australia was watched by more than seven million on BBC TV.

Wednesday's historic match was the most watched of the tournament so far, with a peak audience of 7.3m and an additional 3.8m streams across BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport Online.

There were also 2.7m requests on digital platforms for highlights and clips from the game.

Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo were on target in Sydney on Wednesday as the Lionesses claimed a 3-1 victory to become the first England team to reach a senior World Cup final since the men's side won the 1966 tournament on home soil.

Coach Sarina Wiegman, who is the first coach to take two countries to the final of the tournament after leading the Netherlands to the 2019 showpiece, said reaching the decider was a "fairytale".

The match also broke Australian broadcast records as it became the most watched television programme of any genre in the country since the existing rating system was established in 2001.

According to viewing figures, it had an average audience of 7.13m and reached 11.15m Australians across the country.

It beat the 2003 men's Rugby World Cup final, which had attracted an average audience of about 4m. Under the previous rating system, more than 8m watched Cathy Freeman win 400m gold at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
