Hello my Friends.

With this thread we're going to look at The Beatles various cover versions ranging from their Parlaphone (U.S. Capitol) albums, 1962 Decca auditions and 1962-1965 BBC Radio series.

All will be featured.

We know that there has been thousands of Beatles songs covered by various singers, groups and muso's for 60 years!

I thought it would be great to collate the other angle : Their cover versions particularly the singers who influenced and inspired The Fab Four.

Here's an interesting double.

The Beatles recorded their version of "Chains" - a song written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, on their first album "Please Please Me.

The first released version was by The Cookies in 1962.

But, in 1984, it was found the actual first ever recording was by Don & Phil Everly also in 1962 that was never released. It saw a release in the UK on the brilliant "Nice Guys" compilation.

Carole King, in the Living Room Tour, is the version I'm familiar with:

Been reading over on instagram how much John Lennon, nearly throughout his life was a devoted feline lover. Including at one time a cat named "Elvis".

Wonderful anecdote this :face-with-tears-of-joy:

The Beatles (with Lennon singing lead) in 1965 would record their cover of "Leave My Kitten Alone" (although record was un-released until 1996) . Original record was by Little Willie John in 1959.

Lend Me Your Comb by Carol Hughes with Hugo Peretti & His Orchestra. (December 1957)

First recorded by Carol Hughes in November 1957, the Roulette label release a demo in December and then a single in January, 1958 and then a full national release in march 1958 on Columbia.

There's no doubt the Beatles, however, liked and was inspired by the Carl Perkins version, where they would record their cover on their BBC radio series in '63.

Top Notes - Twist and Shout (1961)

This early Phil Spector production went nowhere, but co-writer Bert Berns successfully rearranged it the following year for the Isley Brothers, of which the Beatles would model their famous rendition of ("Please, Please Me" album) in '63.

The Beatles cover was influenced by both Charles and Presley's records. They performed on their BBC radio series,

Arthur Alexander - A Shot of Rhythm and Blues (1961)

The a-side, “You Better Move On” reached #24 in early 1962 and was Arthur Alexander’s first Hot-100 entry. He wrote that song himself and it was later covered by the Rolling Stones on an EP titled, The Rolling Stones. It was also on their 1965 US album, December's Children (And Everybody's).

“A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues” was written by session guitarist, Terry Thompson and was also the subject of many covers.
Johnny Kidd & The Pirates had a UK hit in 1963.

The Beatles recorded their rendition for BBC radio in 1963, which was later released on the CD, “Live At The BBC”.
