The Tournament:

The Monte-Carlo Masters is an annual tennis tournament for male professional players held in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, a commune that borders on Monaco. The event is part of the ATP Tour Masters 1000 on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. The tournament is played on clay courts and is held every year in the April–May period.

The Monte Carlo tennis championship was first held in 1897. It became an "Open" event in 1969. From 1970 through 1972 and from 1978 through 1989 it was a major tournament of the Grand Prix Tour as part of the Grand Prix Super Series top tier events. In 1973 the tournament was part of the Rothmans Spring Mediterranean Circuit. From 1974 through 1977 the tournament was part of the World Championship Tennis (WCT) circuit. In 1990 it became an ATP Championship Series Single Week tennis event.

Beginning in 2009, Monte Carlo became the only Masters 1000 tournament not to have a mandatory player commitment. Most of the top players still elect to play the event despite this status.

Rafael Nadal won the title eight consecutive times between 2005 and 2012, making him the only player to win eight consecutive titles at the same tournament. In 2017, contesting his 11th final against Albert Ramos Viñolas, he won the title for an Open Era record 10th time. The following year, Nadal improved this record to 11 wins in a final against Kei Nishikori.

About Monte Carlo:

Monte Carlo is officially an administrative area of the Principality of Monaco, specifically the ward of Monte Carlo/Spélugues, where the Monte Carlo Casino is located. Informally, the name also refers to a larger district, the Monte Carlo Quarter (corresponding to the former municipality of Monte Carlo), which besides Monte Carlo/Spélugues also includes the wards of La Rousse/Saint Roman, Larvotto/Bas Moulins and Saint Michel. The permanent population of the ward of Monte Carlo is about 3,500, while that of the quarter is about 15,000. Monaco has four traditional quarters. From west to east they are: Fontvieille (the newest), Monaco-Ville (the oldest), La Condamine, and Monte Carlo.

Is it a pure travesty that someone who had won the title 12 times is the number 3 seed. SMH2
"Only" 11, so far. ;) But do you really want clay to be like Wimbledon and seed by record rather than ranking?

Good point although I would be happy if clay seeded like Wimbledon, it's gonna make Rafa the primary beneficiary IMO.

He often reminds me of Safin, anyway, and this quote harkens back to Safin complaining that "grass is for cows."

Mark my words, the Wimbledon committee will probably throw out some new pulled out of their ass Covid era rules/exceptions to justify making Federer the #2 seed at Wimbledon.

It should be a simple ATP rule, if you win a tournament for the 10th time, you are automatically the #1 seed the next year, ditto if you win it for a 11th, 12th, 13th or 14th time.....

That would be a rule for basically one or two players. (I think Roger has won Basel 10 times.) I do get why Wimbledon has a separate rule for ranking grass, with such a shortened season. I am equally sure that the ATP and the rest of the players see nothing wrong with putting some kind of governor on Nadal on clay. The season is complete enough to keep the ATP rankings as the rankings for clay events. Think of it this way: without even a ranking advantage, Rafa has still won RG 13 times. I should look up how many times he's won it ranked #1, but I don't think it's even the majority of times.

Sorry but these days I don’t buy the shortened grass season rule, and TBH, if the W grass plays like a HC more as so many uber Federer fans claim, then the ATP rankings are fair enough to seed. Plenty of dirt ballers for example can do well on HC or grass, Wimbledon pulls these stunts simply because they can, such as the all white attire rule.

Any idea what goes on in MC today? Rain? I see a schedule for today, but no scores. Weather looks to be kind of dreary all week, but I couldn't see that it's raining so bad now.

EDIT: I see they have changed the schedule, so everything is put off until late afternoon. Must be raining.
