Exorbitant 655 percent increase reportedly for the mens final. This has been in our news two days ago... Someone should take ticketmaster to account!

Fans have called out the Australian Open with its ticketing provider Ticketmaster charging up to AU $5999 ( thats $3,959.34 United States Dollar) for the best seats, more than a week out from the championship match.

It would cost you at least $1999 to get in the door – for a single seat right at the top of Rod Laver Arena – but you could spend the same for a top-tier seat for the women’s final a night earlier. The minimum price to get in for that match is $499.

This is due to TicketMaster’s ‘In Demand Tickets’ system, introduced a few years ago, which attempts to balance supply and demand by charging the maximum the market will pay for the tickets, rather than just setting a standard price.

“The goal is to give fans fair and safe access to the best tickets while enabling artists and other people involved in staging live events to price tickets closer to their true market value,” Ticketmaster says of the system, which also tries to limit huge mark-ups on the resale market (because the mark-up comes when you first buy the ticket instead).

Entry-level tickets for the 2019 men’s final were $305. So while it’s not a perfect comparison, you’d be paying 655% more five years later for the same ticket if you tried to buy it today.

“This criminal “dynamic pricing” rort from Ticketmaster. Cheapest seat for the men’s final is now $2000. Most expensive: $6000. For one ordinary seat,” journalist Neil McMahon tweeted.

“Say it again: this should not be allowed. It’s legalised scalping.”

It’s definitely a rip off as tickets should be $5 after Nadal withdrew.

By contrast what were the US ticket prices for the mens and ladies U S Open singles finals last year? Was ticket costs determined on what your seating distances/vantage point was from the centre-court, the way it is for the AO?
