Woah..this is two and a half years away! Tommy Can You Hear Me and Ferrer will probably be retired by then.

I guess the bronze in doubles will go to some other country.

There is a limit of 2 doubles teams per country. ;)

But, no such luck in singles. Each country is allowed up to 4 players.

In one of the Olympics (is it 2008 or 2004), the Russian Women sweeped the event.

You may be surprised at who will dominate there...it is to far away to even think about.

Also I never thought pro tennis should be in the Ole Limpics.

True enough, if you want to start with this. Why not now, while it's a bit quiet in tennis, and some of us are snowed under. But I think you put too much faith in an aging Spanish Armada. Rafa would be first choice for gold, at this point in time, and would be nearly sure for a medal, anyway. I would agree that Ferrer and Robredo would be less likely to feature hugely in 2016, unless Ferrer takes to doubles, IMO. I'd be looking to Carreno Busta, Batista Agut, Granollers and Andujar, and then mainly in doubles.

Djokovic will be keen for a gold medal. And what about Federer/Wawrinka to repeat in doubles in Rio? They're both very fine on clay. Which is all to say nothing about Del Potro, and some of the up-and-comers from So. America. Three or four years ago, you might have considered a sweep by Spain on clay, but not in 2016. Beyond Nadal, they've got some rebuilding to do in the next few years, IMO.

RE: 2016 Clay Olympics

Initially, there were rumors that 2016 Olympics will be in Clay. Then after the dust settled,
there were rumors saying it will be on hard courts. Then for a while, it looked like nobody
really knew on what courts it will be played on.

However, Rafa states (see the link in OP) that 2016 Olympics will be on clay as a matter
of fact. From his statement, I assume that it is now a surety that it will be on clay.

That is the reason, I started the thread.

Masterclass, do you have information to the contrary? Have you seen any official
announcement on this regard?

GSM, I've seen no authoritative confirmation that it is either on hard or clay. So far I've seen architect's proposals, designs, etc. Some are like the images I used above, some are like the dark red on red image that sort of looks like the old Basel hard court colors, or perhaps it meant to look like clay, who knows?

The Olympic site itself has an extensive description of the Barra Tennis Center venue, number of stadium courts, number of outside courts, the fact that some of it is temporary for the Olympics only, the fact that Brazil wants it designed so that it will be permanently useful, perhaps even to support a future masters 1000 or 500 event. But in all of that detail, they conveniently neglect to mention the surface. I sent a tweet to the official Olympic twitter asking them to confirm the surface, but have had no response as of yet. It may be that it hasn't officially been decided yet.

I believe the article you mention might be mixing up some of Rafa's quotes due to the current tournament in RIO. Or perhaps Rafa believes they will be using the court in this tournament for the Olympics, or maybe he believes that it will have to be clay. I don't know. The tennis.com article is coming from the Break Point BR article, which is a translation of the original Spanish... You know how easy it is for things to get confused in the translation.

I'd like to see it confirmed by the official Olympic venue. And as others have said, it's still 2 years away. Things can change. But one thing that is for sure is the 2016 Summer Olympic schedule. It's set for Aug 5 to Aug 21. I personally don't think it makes sense for them to have tennis on clay so close to the US Open, when the players have already transitioned from clay to grass in late spring, and then grass to the summer American hard courts. But one never knows.

Respectfully,
masterclass

My educated guess is it will be clay if Rio is really aiming for a Masters in the S.A. clay swing.

Otherwise DecoTurd would make most sense. A grass-clay-HC transition may keep some players away from the Olympics, I might bet already now that in case of clay Olympics, Isner will be thinking "F**k Olympics, my aim is in the USO's on HCs, I'll prepare by playing on Washington's/Atlanta's HCs in the Olympics' week". And even some top guys may be complaining about that transition (even though the biggest surface whiner and his team would probably keep his mouth shut for change ;) ).

I'll by fine with whatever surface, I'll be watching swimming that week. I wanna see sports where the Olympics are the pinnacle.

Actually, re Isner, he's played some decent matches on clay against Fed at Davis Cup and gave Nadal hell at Roland Garros. He hasn't been fully fit for quite some time with knee issues affecting his already poor movement, but if fully fit and having a good serving day he can be extremely dangerous.

Yeah, Isner's had some great clay performances. But somehow he looks to me like a player who might sacrifice the Olympics for a better USO preparation. I have an impression the USO is his main goal, maybe that's because he's American. And we can remember Roddick skipping Beijing, even though it was on DecoTurf.
