Matches begin today, this is a WTA Premier level tournament, though the matches will be on outside courts,as the ATP Cup matches will be on centre court.....Hmmm.
BTW no women's matches on centre court until Thursday....because of the ATP Cup.

S.Stosur v A.Kerber......breaks of serve in the 1st set, which went to a t/break,Sam did serve for the 1st set only to get broken, momentum swings in the t/break at one point Kerber was leading 4-1,Sam fought back with a great fhand down the line which brought up SP on her serve.Stosur 1st set 76(5)

Upset of the tournament and I will need to take a valium lol!

Stosur d Kerber 76(5) 76(4) Sam's serve was the standout all match....well done!

BTW it has been 5 years since Sam had beaten Angie.

That Wimby victory has to be the biggest of the 3 wins

TC commentator made a great observations in regards to Sloane's fitness and her weight..it's has been a determination of well she competes..I think her weight is up quite a bit since she won the US O 2017.. hopefully she will get it back together..she is so talented

Sloane to me has never had ' a champion's mentality' she gives up when things get tough, she just rolled her eyes when Samsonova played a great shot,Samsonova has been the aggressor in this match and deserves the victory.

Very interesting match going the distance between Osaka v Sakkari......Osaka took the 1st set 62,played controlled aggressive tennis, movement around the court excellent.Sakkari cut down on her UFE in the 2nd set, played with more control on her ground shots and has won the 2nd set 76 (4)..she is a tricky player, though I feel Osaka will pull through.
Osaka d Sakkari 62 67 (4) 63.....A competitive match, though Osaka showed in the 3rd set why she will be hard to beat, for her first match quite impressive.

I will not be at all surprised if Sharapova retires this year, she hardly played any tournaments last year, her shoulder problem continues, apparently she is hoping for a wild card from the officials at the AO.I am not at all surprised she suffered a first round defeat.

Nah..she is STILL keeping her endorsements and marketing her brand..unless someone knocks her up, Pova ain't gonna go nowhere.. IMO
