Roger could fall further in the rankings before he rises again, depending upon how he does at the Australian Open. But a semifinal result might be hard to reproduce in his first Slam back, so if he were to, say, go out in the 4R he'd be losing over 500 points.

Roger will have a good chance to gain some points in the winter/spring hardcourt season: Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, and then again in clay. Last year, between the Australian Open and the grass season, he only played one tournament: Monte Carlo.

So it could be that he drops to around #20 after the AO, then builds back up to the top 10 in the early hardcourt season. It is hard imagining him breaking into the top 5 unless he's able to get to a Slam final, so probably Wimbledon will be his first chance.

As far as Roger is concerned, I will be happy to see him play good tennis that he has been playing all these years. It might not be very potent now but if he takes out one of the other big 4 in the 4th round or QF that would be great for me.

Roger and Rafa will make a slam final in 2017..those two have so much genius it's almost maddening..

I also put more stock in Del Potro or Stan @ this stage than Roger & Rafa, can not see these 2 lighting up what thay did in the past.Maybe Raonic wil take a Slam maybe not.The Big 2 will make more Slam finals than the others, that's how I think things will go.

It's not that JMDP doesn't have the talent but it would take a perfect storm like USO 2014 when Cilic won without facing Nadal(who didn't play due to injury), Djoker who was taken out by Nishikori, Murray lost a grueling 4 setter to Novak and Stan who lost to Nishikori. Yes, Cilic played great against Roger and destroyed a jaded Nishikori in the final. If Roger and Rafa are able to regain their top form, Stan may fall back to the sub top 5 level again.

Ok AntiPusher let's look @ this another way in 2016,Nole & Andy played in 6 Slam Finals out of 8.Stan/Potty/Raonic or Cilic might get hot In one Slam that thay don't make the Final.Only one Slam each did Nole & Andy not make the Final last year.Nole & Andy are the two main guys in tennis right now,Roger & Nadal are not till thay win a Slam again. How long was the last Slam these guy's won? or Final?

Rafa won Monte Carlo, Barcelona , Rio gold medal with Lopez..Fed would have probably won Wimbledon if his knee wasn't a bit jaded against Milos..

Roger would have been favoured and therefore backed by many to win Wimbledon this year if fully healthy and the fact that he managed to make the semi with a bad knee says it all.

yes I agree we will probably see a new slam winner in 2017 but I still think Federer has one more left in him.

Well, Federer last was on 2012 so it almost counts as a new winner... by the way, El Dude, you may now this by heart... what is the greatest time span one player had between 2 consecutive GS wins?

I don't know it by heart, but have a handy chart or two that could help. Off the top of my head, the two players that come to mind are Marat Safin and Boris Becker. Now let me go check....

OK, it looks like there are three players in the Open Era who have a gap of five years between Slams: I was right about Safin (2000 and 2005) and Becker (1991 and 1996), but also Arthur Ashe (1969 and 1974). Before the Open Era, I'm not sure.

Coincidentally, if Roger were to win one in 2017, it would be the same gap length.
